Chapter 2 - The Empty Penthouse and the MistressMiles away, slicing through the torrential Boston rain, Grant Whitmore’s luxury sedan pulled up to the private terminal at Logan International Airport.

Grant sat in the back seat, tapping his fingers impatiently against his leather briefcase. The delay at the hospital had thrown off his schedule, but the thought of Vanessa waiting for him instantly smoothed the irritation from his brow. Vanessa Cole wasn't just a mistress; she was an ambition realized. Young, sharp, and deeply connected in the elite circles of Boston real estate, she represented the exact kind of high-stakes lifestyle Grant felt he deserved.
The sliding door of the private lounge opened, and Vanessa stepped inside, her designer trench coat damp from the drizzle, her blonde hair perfectly styled.
"Grant, darling," she purred, sliding into the leather seat beside him. "You look stressed. Did the hypochondriac finally stop crying for attention?"
Grant let out a heavy sigh, pulling her close and kissing her cheek. "You have no idea, Ness. She made a massive scene at North Harbor Medical. Demanded I stay for a simple stomachache. Can you imagine? Some people just love being the center of attention."
Vanessa smirked, resting a manicured hand on his knee. "Well, she’s always been dead weight, Grant. Ever since your father set up that trust and saddled you with her family's failing debts, she’s been an anchor dragging you down. Speaking of which... did you sign those transfer papers for the Beacon Hill property yet?"
Grant froze for a fraction of a second. The Beacon Hill estate was part of the original Rowan-Whitmore merger portfolio—assets his father had acquired under deeply questionable circumstances following the fatal 2001 bridge crash. Claire didn't know about the shell companies, of course. She thought it was just a normal marriage.
"Not yet," Grant lied smoothly, kissing her lips. "Soon. Let's just get to the penthouse. I need a drink."
Little did Grant know, as his car sped back toward the city lights, his phone was buzzing relentlessly on the floor mat.
