Chapter 5 - Morning at the PenthouseThe morning sun cast a cold, gray light across the marble floors of the multi-million-dollar penthouse in Beacon Hill.

Grant Whitmore stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, sipping a double espresso while wearing a silk bathrobe. Across the room, Vanessa Cole was lounging on the velvet sofa, scrolling through her tablet, her bare legs draped over the cushions.
"So, have you heard from the hospital?" Vanessa asked lazily, taking a sip of mimosa. "Did the dramatic wife survive her little theater production?"
Grant scoffed, checking his gold Rolex. "Knowing Claire, she’s probably demanding a private suite and a personal concierge. Honestly, Ness, I’m exhausted. The second she’s discharged, I’m having her packed off to that wellness retreat in Vermont. I can't have her throwing tantrums when we host the investors' gala next month."
Just as Vanessa opened her mouth to reply, a sharp, deafening chime echoed through the penthouse.
It wasn't the doorbell.
It was the master security console mounted by the entrance. The screen flashed bright red, overriding the smart-home system.
WARNING: MASTER ASSET FREEZE ACTIVATED. ALL ACCOUNTS LINKED TO ROWAN-WHITMORE TRUST PENDING AUDIT.
Grant frowned, walking over to the panel. "What the hell is this? A glitch?"
He tapped his access code into the screen. Instead of the usual green confirmation checkmark, a stark, clinical error message appeared in bold white text:
ACCESS DENIED. ASSETS REASSIGNED PURSUANT TO FEDERAL RESTRUCTURE MANDATE 2026-B. INQUIRIES DIRECTED TO MERCER HOLDINGS & LEGAL.
Grant’s coffee cup slipped from his fingers, shattering into a thousand pieces against the Italian marble.
"Mercer Holdings?" Grant muttered, the color draining entirely from his face. "That’s... that's impossible. Mercer is a multi-billion-dollar medical tech empire out of New York. What do they have to do with our trust?"
Before Vanessa could answer, Grant’s cell phone began to ring furiously.
He snatched it off the counter. It was his chief corporate attorney, David Vance, screaming through the receiver before Grant could even say hello.
"Grant! Where the hell are you? Do you know what’s happening?" Vance yelled over the line. "Every single corporate account, the Beacon Hill estate deed, and your personal investment portfolio have been frozen by a federal emergency injunction! The trustee who authorized it... it's Owen Mercer!"
Grant’s knees buckled slightly. The name sent a chill straight down his spine—a legendary name in biotech, a ghost he had never expected to cross paths with.
"Owen Mercer?" Grant choked out. "Why would Mercer freeze my assets?"
"Because," Vance's voice dropped to a terrified whisper, "Mercer just filed an emergency motion claiming direct lineage and co-ownership of the original Rowan estate assets—the exact assets your father acquired in 2001. And Grant... according to the court filings, Mercer isn't alone. He’s acting as legal proxy for the primary surviving heir."
Grant stared blankly across the room at Vanessa, his voice a hollow shell.

"Who?"
"Your wife, Grant," Vance said grimly. "Claire Rowan Whitmore."
