Chapter 4 - The Ghost of Rowan EngineeringThe silence in the ICU room was absolute, broken only by the steady hiss of oxygen and the pounding of Claire’s heart.

"No," Claire gasped, shaking her head frantically against the pillow, tears spilling over her lashes. "No, that's impossible. My brother... my family died in the river. The police report said everyone was gone. I was ten years old..."
"The police reports were bought, Claire," Owen said, pulling a chair close to the bed and sitting down. He took her trembling hand in his—a warm, solid anchor in the middle of a nightmare. "The bridge collapse in Maine wasn't an accident. It was an assassination."
Claire stared at him, the sterile hospital room seeming to spin away. "An... an assassination? Who?"
"Rowan Engineering," Owen said, his eyes hardening into flint. "Our father discovered that his primary financial backers—a syndicate of predatory corporate raiders led by senior partners named Whitmore—were systematically looting the company's patents and driving it into bankruptcy. Dad was going to go to the SEC. Two days later, our SUV was forced off the bridge."
Claire’s breath caught in her throat. The name Whitmore.
The family name of the man she had married.
"Grant..." Claire breathed, horror dawning like a physical blow. "Grant’s father, Arthur Whitmore... he was your father's business partner."
"Not just a partner," Owen corrected, a bitter smile twisting his lips. "The man who inherited our family's entire fortune for pennies on the dollar while we were declared legally dead. And Grant? Grant didn't marry you out of love, Claire. I’ve had investigators looking into his corporate filings for three years. He married you to keep the remaining Rowan trust assets locked down under a spousal clause, preventing any independent audit of your inheritance."
The betrayal hit Claire with a force ten times worse than the sepsis. Every argument, every cold dismissal, every time he called her 'unstable' or 'insecure'—it wasn't just marital cruelty. It was a calculated, lifelong psychological cage designed to keep her weak, blind, and submissive.
"He left me to die," Claire whispered, her voice trembling with a cold, terrifying wrath that replaced her tears. "While I was bleeding out on the kitchen floor, he was planning a flight with Vanessa."
Owen stood up, towering over the bedside. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, secure flash drive, placing it gently on her bedside table.
"They thought we were dead, Claire," Owen said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal purr. "They thought they had won. But the Rowan name isn't dead. And neither are we."

He leaned down, kissing her forehead gently.
"Rest, little sister. Tomorrow, we take back everything they stole."
