Chapter 2 - WHISPERS IN THE FOUNDATIONThe heavy oak door at the top of the cellar stairs groaned open.

Sophia’s heart slammed against her ribs like a trapped bird. She scooped little Emma into her arms, pressing the toddler’s face into her shoulder so she wouldn’t see the terror distorting her mother's features. Every instinct screamed at Sophia to run, to hide in the dark recesses of the stone pantry, but the heavy, measured footsteps echoing down the stairs left nowhere to go.

Dr. Aris Vance appeared in the dim light of the cellar, his medical bag swinging slightly in his left hand.

For a fraction of a second, relief washed over Sophia—until she noticed the doctor wasn't breathing heavily from a hurried descent. His steps were calm, deliberate, almost mechanical.

“Sophia,” Dr. Vance said, his voice eerily steady in the damp subterranean air. “I received your call. But I must admit, I am surprised to find you down here in the restricted wing.”

Sophia shifted Emma tighter against her hip, her eyes darting from the doctor to Lorenzo, who was struggling desperately against his iron bonds, a guttural sound of warning vibrating behind the thick black tape.

“The... the basement door was unlatched, Doctor,” Sophia lied, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to steady it. “Emma wandered down. We found Mr. Duca. We need an ambulance—now.”

Dr. Vance didn’t look at Lorenzo. Instead, his cold, analytical gaze locked onto Sophia. A slow, chilling smile touched the corners of his mouth.

“An ambulance, Sophia? For a man who officially left for Zurich this morning on private business?” The doctor stepped closer, closing the distance between them. “You shouldn’t have come down these stairs. Ignorance was your best armor, and your daughter’s, too.”

Lorenzo’s eyes blazed with fury. He strained against the iron chair, the metal groaning under the sudden violent tension of his muscles. Through sheer willpower, he managed to tilt his head, throwing his weight sideways in a desperate bid to disrupt the doctor's path.

Dr. Vance sighed, pulling a sleek, silenced pistol from inside his tailored tweed jacket with terrifying casualness.

“Quiet, old friend,” Vance murmured, leveling the barrel straight at Lorenzo’s chest. “Your reign ended the moment you signed those shipping port concessions over to the syndicate. Tonight, the empire changes hands. And unfortunately, the help saw things they shouldn’t have.”

Sophia stumbled backward, her heel catching on the uneven stone floor. She braced herself for the impact of the bullet, pulling Emma down into a protective shield with her own body.

CRASH.

The heavy cellar door didn't just open this time—it was kicked off its upper hinge.

A tall silhouette filled the threshold, bathed in the harsh light of the mansion's hallway. A deep, gravelly voice echoed through the cold stone vault, cutting through the tension like a razor.

“Drop the weapon, Aris. Or I turn you into Swiss cheese before you can pull the trigger.”
