Chapter 9 - ASHES AND REDEMPTIONThree weeks later, the Duca estate looked entirely different.

The blood had been scrubbed from the stone cellar, the broken doors replaced with reinforced steel, and the security systems upgraded to a level that made the mansion an impenetrable fortress.

Vincent Romano and Dr. Aris Vance were currently sitting in a maximum-security federal holding facility, facing life imprisonment without parole, as Lorenzo’s legal team systematically dismantled their co-conspirators across the country.

In the sunlit courtyard garden, Sophia watered a row of red roses while little Emma chased a new calico kitten across the manicured lawn.

Mateo stood leaning against the stone pillar of the veranda, a cup of steaming black coffee in his hand. He looked over at Sophia, a tentative, hopeful expression on his face.

“Lorenzo offered me my old job back,” Mateo said softly, stepping closer. “Head of security. But only if I agree to take full-time family leave on weekends.”

Sophia paused, setting down the watering can. She looked at Mateo, seeing the genuine remorse and the quiet dedication in his eyes—a man who had stepped into the jaws of hell to protect her and their daughter when it mattered most.

“And what did you say?” Sophia asked, a faint, teasing smile playing on her lips.

“I told him I’d think about it,” Mateo chuckled, stepping closer and wrapping his arms gently around her waist. “Provided my wife approves.”

From the second-floor study window, Lorenzo Duca stood watching the small family in the garden below. He held a small, polished pewter button between his thumb and forefinger—the very button that had exposed the traitor and saved his empire.

He tossed it carelessly into the wastebasket, turned away from the window, and sat down at his desk.

The storm had passed. The house was secure. And for the first time in decades, the most feared man in the city felt something entirely foreign in his chest: peace.
