CHAPTER 1 — The Guard Who Refused to Be Afraid

The moment Victor Carter wrapped his fist around the new guard's uniform, every conversation inside the prison yard stopped.
No basketball bounced.
No one laughed anymore.
Even the birds circling above the razor wire seemed to disappear into the silence.
Victor's grin stretched wider.
"So..." he sneered loudly enough for everyone to hear. "Now everybody gets to see what happens when a rookie forgets whose prison this is."
Around them, nearly a hundred inmates slowly formed a circle.
Several correctional officers instinctively reached for their radios.
They knew Victor's history.
Six feet five.
More than 260 pounds.
Over fifteen years behind bars.
Multiple assaults.
Multiple lockdowns caused by him alone.
Three different wardens had requested his transfer.
Every new employee eventually learned the same lesson—
You never embarrassed Victor Carter in front of witnesses.
David didn't move.
He simply looked at the large hand gripping his shirt.
Then he slowly raised his eyes.
His expression never changed.
"Mr. Carter," he said quietly.
"You need to let go."
Victor burst into laughter.
"You hear that?"
He looked around at the inmates.
"He called me Mister."
The prisoners laughed harder.
One inmate shouted,
"I give him one week before he quits!"
Another yelled,
"He's already scared!"
Victor leaned so close their faces were only inches apart.
"You think you're different?"
David answered without raising his voice.
"No."
"I think every man makes a choice."
Victor smirked.
"And what choice is that?"
David glanced at Victor's hand.
"The choice between respect..."
"...and consequences."
For half a second...
Victor actually hesitated.
Then his pride took over.
He shoved David backward again—harder than before.
Gasps echoed through the yard.
Several guards started running toward them.
Everyone expected punches.
Blood.
Pepper spray.
Another prison riot.
Instead...
David calmly reached into his pocket.
Victor laughed.
"What?"
"Gonna write me a ticket?"
David unfolded a small laminated card.
Only Victor could read what was printed across the top.
Within a heartbeat...
The smile vanished from Victor's face.
His fingers slowly loosened from the uniform.
Nobody else could understand why.
But for the first time in nearly twenty years...
The most feared prisoner had suddenly gone silent.
And that frightened everyone even more.
Because Victor Carter looked as though he had just seen a ghost.
No one knew what David had shown him.
Not yet.
May you like
But whatever was written on that tiny card...
Had completely changed the balance of power inside the prison.
