CHAPTER 3 — The Debt That Could Never Be Repaid

The prison woke the next morning expecting another confrontation.

Instead...

Victor Carter did something no one had ever seen before.

As David entered the yard, Victor stood up from the bench.

Then, in complete silence...

He stepped aside.

Every inmate froze.

Victor wasn't moving out of fear.

He was showing respect.

The gesture spread shockwaves through the prison.

"If Victor respects him..."

"Who is this guard?"

The whispers reached every housing unit before lunch.

Later that afternoon, David requested a private interview with Victor.

Inside the secure room, a camera recorded every second.

David placed a faded photograph on the table.

A younger Officer Michael Hayes stood beside several inmates during a prison literacy program.

One face in the back caught Victor's attention immediately.

Himself.

Only nineteen years old.

Angry.

Lost.

Still believing violence was the only language the world understood.

Victor closed his eyes.

"I owe your father my life."

David remained silent.

Victor continued.

"There was a transport riot."

"Everyone believes your father disappeared because inmates attacked him."

"That's not what happened."

David leaned forward.

"What did happen?"

Victor's hands trembled.

"He saved us."

The room fell silent.

Victor explained that corrupt officials had arranged an illegal transfer involving dangerous prisoners and missing evidence. Michael Hayes had uncovered the scheme and refused to cooperate. During the chaos, he protected several inmates—including Victor—from armed criminals exploiting the transfer.

"He told me..." Victor whispered, "'Don't waste the second chance you were given.'"

Victor lowered his head.

"I survived."

"He didn't."

David stared at the table.

For years he had believed his father simply vanished.

Now he realized there had been far more to the story.

Victor slowly pushed a sealed envelope across the table.

"I've hidden this for twenty-four years."

"Inside are names."

"People who made sure the truth never came out."

David carefully opened it.

Official reports.

Handwritten notes.

Photographs.

Evidence that could expose a corruption network reaching far beyond the prison walls.

Just then, the lights flickered.

An emergency alarm echoed through the building.

Every electronic lock clicked.

The prison entered immediate lockdown.

Over the loudspeaker, a tense voice shouted,

"All staff report to emergency positions immediately!"

David and Victor exchanged one look.

Someone had discovered the envelope.

And whoever wanted those secrets buried forever...

Was already making their move.
