CHAPTER 5 — The Hidden Truth
The next morning, federal investigators arrived without warning.
Black SUVs rolled through the prison gates.
Armed agents entered the administration building.
Even the warden looked nervous.
Victor watched from his cell window.
Something much bigger than prison politics was happening.
Inside the conference room, Agent Rebecca Collins placed a thick classified file on the table.
Across the front was a single red stamp.
CONFIDENTIAL
She looked directly at the warden.
"Officer David Walker was never transferred here by accident."
The room fell silent.
"He volunteered."
The warden frowned.
"For what?"
Rebecca opened the file.
"Six months ago, federal intelligence intercepted communications between an international criminal network and several inmates inside Blackridge."
"They planned to eliminate a witness before trial."
"The leader coordinating everything..."
She slid a photograph across the table.
Marcus Hale.
"He isn't just a gang leader."
"He's running a criminal organization from inside prison."
The warden looked stunned.
"And David?"
Rebecca answered quietly.
"He spent twelve years in Special Operations."
"He infiltrated prisons overseas."
"He negotiated hostage rescues."
"He ended riots without firing a shot."
"But this..."
"...is his final mission before retirement."
Outside the office, David continued his normal patrol.
No inmate knew the truth.
No one realized the calm guard they mocked had spent his life walking into places far more dangerous than Blackridge.
Only Victor had begun to understand.
That evening, he approached David during recreation.
"I owe you an apology."
David looked surprised.
"For what?"
Victor lowered his eyes.
"I judged you before I knew who you were."
David smiled faintly.
"You don't owe me anything."
"You owe yourself a better future."
Those words echoed in Victor's mind long after David walked away.
