CHAPTER 6 — The Final Ambush

Three nights later...
Marcus made his move.
The prison chapel was nearly empty when David finished speaking with an elderly inmate.
As he stepped into the corridor...
Every emergency light suddenly shut off.
Darkness swallowed the hallway.
Metal doors slammed.
Footsteps echoed from every direction.
One...
Five...
Ten...
Nearly twenty armed inmates surrounded David.
Marcus stood at the center, smiling.
"No cameras."
"No witnesses."
"No escape."
Several guards tried reaching the hallway.
The electronic locks refused to open.
Inside, David stood completely still.
Marcus laughed.
"Still calm?"
David answered softly.
"I was hoping you'd make the first move."
Marcus charged.
The others followed.
What happened next became prison legend.
David never threw wild punches.
Every movement was controlled.
Every attacker's momentum worked against him.
One after another, homemade weapons hit the floor.
One inmate tripped another.
Another collided into the wall.
Within seconds, the narrow hallway became too crowded for the attackers to move.
Then came a thunderous shout.
"GET AWAY FROM HIM!"
Victor Carter.
Behind him stood dozens of inmates.
Not with weapons.
With empty hands.
Marcus stared in disbelief.
"What are you doing?"
Victor stepped forward.
"We're done living by fear."
"You wanted a war."
"We choose something different."
The inmates surrounded Marcus instead.
His own followers slowly lowered their weapons.
The fight ended without a single fatal injury.
Minutes later, tactical officers finally broke through the locked doors.
Marcus Hale and his closest allies were arrested and transferred to a federal supermax facility.
Weeks later, the prison held a quiet ceremony.
David received the nation's highest correctional service award for preventing one of the largest prison conspiracies in state history.
Victor watched from a distance.
As David prepared to leave Blackridge for his retirement, Victor called out one last time.
"You were never the strongest man because you could fight."
David turned.
Victor smiled.
"You were the strongest because you never needed to."
David nodded.
"No prison changes because of one good guard."
"It changes when one person decides to stop spreading fear."
Victor extended his hand through the bars.
David shook it.
The yard fell silent.
The handshake between the prison's most feared inmate...

...and the guard who refused to hate him...
became the story every new prisoner heard on their very first day at Blackridge.
