Chapter 6 - THE STITCHED-UP PASTLorenzo blinked in surprise. "Your nursing license?"

"Five years ago, I was the head trauma nurse at St. Jude’s Hospital," Emily explained, her voice dropping into a bitter, quiet tone as the memories resurfaced. "A wealthy pharmaceutical donor brought his son in after a street overdose. The boy died because the donor had bribed the hospital to skip standard toxicology screens."

"And?" Lorenzo asked, sensing the rest of the tragedy.

"When I tried to file an official report, the hospital board falsified documents, accused me of drug diversion, and stripped my license," Emily whispered, looking down at her hands. "I lost everything. My career, my reputation, my apartment. That's why I was waiting tables at that restaurant."

Silence filled the grand penthouse suite.

Lorenzo stood up slowly from his desk, walking around until he stood directly in front of her. His tall, imposing frame made her heart race, not with fear, but with a strange, magnetic warmth.

"No one destroys a good person in my city and gets away with it," Lorenzo promised, his voice low, fierce, and absolute. "By tomorrow noon, every member of that corrupt hospital board will be facing federal indictment."

He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently lifting her chin so she had to look into his eyes.

"And by tomorrow evening," Lorenzo continued softly, "you won't just have your nursing license back... you’ll be the Chief Medical Director of the entire Moretti Healthcare Foundation."

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. "Lorenzo... you can't just buy a medical board."

"Watch me," he murmured, his gaze dropping slowly to her lips before meeting her eyes again.
