Chapter 3 - The Secret Ledger of Arthur BennettThe private vault beneath the Bennett estate required a biometric iris scan and a sixteen-digit alphanumeric code that only Alexander possessed. As the heavy steel door swung open with a pneumatic hiss, the smell of aged paper and cold stone enveloped him.

Marcus flicked on the overhead incandescent lights, revealing rows of floor-to-ceiling filing cabinets containing the private history of one of America's wealthiest dynasties.
"Your father was a meticulous man," Marcus observed, pulling a pair of white cotton gloves from his pocket. "He didn't trust digital servers for his most sensitive personal affairs. Everything important was kept on physical ledger sheets, encrypted with old-school ciphers."
Alexander walked past the rows until he reached the section labeled 19-19. Nineteen years of marriage, culminating in the year Catherine vanished.
"Here," Marcus pointed to a black leather-bound ledger stamped with Arthur Bennett's personal crest.
Alexander opened the book. The pages were filled with neat, spidery handwriting—his father’s hand. Dates, financial transfers, property acquisitions, and payoffs. Page after page of corporate maneuvering until his eyes caught a specific entry dated exactly seven years and two weeks prior: St. Jude’s Memorial, Account 409-B. Discretionary allocation for maternity ward isolation unit.
"Read the line below it," Marcus urged, leaning over Alexander's shoulder.
Alexander squinted at the faded ink:
Twin B secured. Transferred to secure foster placement under supervision of Nurse M. Higgins. Mother's condition stabilized for transport, but cognitive suppression protocol initiated per corporate directive to protect lineage integrity.
The words hit Alexander like a physical blow. Twin B secured. Cognitive suppression protocol.
"My God," Alexander breathed, gripping the edge of the metal shelf. "Catherine didn't die of a sudden illness. My father poisoned her—or drugged her—into a catatonic state because she refused to give up one of the twins! He wanted a singular, untainted heir for the Bennett empire. He thought twins would complicate the corporate succession, or... or something even worse."
"And when Catherine woke up or fought back," Marcus added grimly, "they staged her death, locked her away in a private sanitarium under a false name, and smuggled the second child out through Nurse Higgins, who had a crisis of conscience and tried to protect the baby instead of handing her over to your father's goons."
"Where is she now?" Alexander's voice cracked with a mixture of grief and unbridled fury. "Where is Catherine?"
Before Marcus could reply, a sharp, piercing alarm echoed through the subterranean vault. The red emergency strobe lights flickered to life, bathing the rows of steel cabinets in an eerie, blood-red glow.
"Intruder alert," Marcus cursed, pulling a compact Glock from his holster. "Sector four: main access tunnel."

"How is that possible?" Alexander demanded, drawing his own weapon—a custom piece he kept locked in his desk. "This vault is impenetrable!"
"It's not an intruder trying to get in, Alex," Marcus said, his eyes fixed on the security monitor by the door. "It's a remote override from the main mansion. Someone just locked all the vault doors from the outside. We're being sealed in."
