Chapter 9 - The Arrival at JFKThe private aviation terminal at JFK International Airport was bathed in the blinding glare of midday sunlight reflecting off the tarmac. A sleek Gulfstream private jet had just taxied to a halt near Hangar 4, its turbine engines winding down with a low, dying whine.

Alexander stood at the foot of the mobile staircase, his heart hammering against his ribs with a ferocity he hadn't felt since he was a young man. Beside him stood Thomas and Chloe, holding tightly to each of his hands.

"Is that Mom?" Thomas whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of hope and fear as the aircraft door began to open.

"Yes, son," Alexander managed to say, though his throat felt tight as a fist. "That's your mother."

The pneumatic seal hissed, and the cabin door swung outward.

A woman stepped out onto the metal landing. She wore a simple beige trench coat, her dark hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. Her face was pale, her features delicate and striking—the exact woman whose portraits hung in Alexander’s office, the woman he had mourned and buried in his heart for seven long years.

Catherine Bennett paused at the top of the stairs, shielding her eyes against the bright New York sun. She looked down at the tarmac, scanning the small group waiting below.

When her eyes landed on Alexander, there was no flash of recognition. No tearful reunion. Her gaze remained blank, polite, and profoundly distant—the look of a stranger staring at someone she had never met before.

"Ma'am?" the federal escort accompanying her prompted gently, gesturing toward the stairs. "This is Mr. Bennett. Your... your husband."

Catherine stepped down slowly, walking across the tarmac until she stood just three feet away from Alexander. Up close, her dark brown eyes were breathtaking, but they lacked the warm, luminous spark he remembered so vividly. They were clouded by the invisible fog of the neurological suppression drugs Julian and his father had forced upon her.

"Hello," Catherine said, her voice soft, melodic, but utterly devoid of personal history. "The marshals told me... they told me my name is Catherine. They said I have a family here."

Alexander felt a sharp pang of profound grief tear through his soul. All these years, he had fought to find her, believing love could conquer death itself. But facing her now, realizing that her memories of their life together had been stolen by the very family that bore his name, was a torment he had never imagined.

He knelt down slightly so he was eye-level with his children.

"Mom," Thomas whispered, his voice cracking as he stepped forward, extending a trembling hand to touch her coat. "It's us. It's me and Chloe. You... you used to sing to us."

Catherine looked down at the two children. For a fraction of a second, a strange, electric tremor flickered across her face. Her hand rose slowly, hovering over Thomas's dark hair, her fingers tangling gently in his curls.

"I don't remember..." she whispered, a single tear spilling over her lashes and tracking down her cheek. "...but looking at you both... my heart remembers."
