Chapter 4 - Trapped Beneath the EmpireThe heavy steel door of the vault slammed shut with a sickening, hydraulic thud. The automated deadbolts engaged one by one, echoing through the small room like gunshots.

Silence followed, save for the rhythmic humming of the emergency ventilation system pumping filtered air into the chamber.
"Marcus! Can you override the digital panel?" Alexander rushed to the wall keypad, punching in his master admin code. The screen blinked red: ACCESS DENIED. SYSTEM LOCKED BY HIGHER AUTHORITY.
Marcus holstered his weapon and pulled a specialized diagnostic tablet from his jacket, connecting a cable directly into the maintenance port beneath the keypad. His fingers danced across the glass screen in a blur of motion.
"It's not a local glitch," Marcus muttered, sweat beading on his forehead. "Someone at the corporate headquarters just initiated a Level 9 security lockdown on the Bennett estate network. They've cut our external communications, jammed our cell signals, and overridden the manual release valves."
"Who has that kind of clearance?" Alexander growled, slamming his fist against the reinforced steel door. "Only three people alive had Level 9 access: me, my father, and..." He stopped, his blood running cold.
"And your uncle, Julian Bennett," Marcus finished for him. "The man who took over as Vice Chairman of Bennett Enterprises the moment your father stepped down."
Julian. The smooth, silver-tongued corporate shark who always wore a polite smile at board meetings, who comforted Alexander at Catherine’s funeral with a hand on his shoulder, whispering words of condolence while secretly plotting the erosion of Alexander’s control over the board.
"Julian has been working with my father all along," Alexander realized, the pieces clicking into a terrifying mosaic. "He knew about Catherine. He knew about the twin. And if we find the girl—if we uncover the truth—their entire house of cards comes crashing down."
"Look at this," Marcus pointed to his tablet. A small terminal window opened, streaming a live feed from the mansion's security cameras mounted in the hallway directly outside the vault.
On the screen, a figure in a tailored charcoal suit walked slowly down the marble corridor toward the vault door. He held a silver-plated cane in one hand and adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses with the other.
It was Julian Bennett.
He stopped directly in front of the camera lens, smiling warmly as if he were greeting a favorite nephew. He tapped the lens with his cane.
"Alexander, my boy," Julian's voice filtered through the intercom speaker inside the vault, rich and calm. "I tried to warn you to leave the past buried. But you just couldn't let it go, could you? Much like your stubborn wife."
Alexander stepped up to the intercom speaker, pressing the talk button. His voice shook with a lethal fury. "Open this door, Julian. You can't bury the truth forever."
"Truth?" Julian chuckled softly, a dry, mocking sound. "Truth is a luxury for people who don't run multi-billion-dollar empires, Alex. Your father built this company on absolute control. When Catherine threatened to take the children and expose the illegal corporate restructuring we used to secure our initial funding, your father did what had to be done. And now... you're making the exact same mistake."

"Where is Catherine?" Alexander shouted, pressing his face against the cold metal door. "Is she alive? Tell me!"
"She's resting, Alex," Julian replied smoothly. "In a very nice, very quiet facility in the Swiss Alps, paid for by the very trust fund your son is set to inherit. As for your little street girl... well, accidents happen in New York every day. A tragic hit-and-run near the warehouses. How unfortunate that a grieving father couldn't protect his own flesh and blood twice."
