Chapter 16 - Emergency Injunction

Within twenty minutes, the Tribeca penthouse was swarming with actual federal agents, tactical units, and crime scene investigators.
Agent Miller pushed through the bedroom door, stepping over the unconscious operative who was now being zip-tied by two federal marshals. He looked at Dad, then down at the open safe, and finally at the smartphone in my hand where Judge Harrison’s digital signature glowed in bright green text.
“You have a flair for dramatic timing, Hayes,” Miller said, wiping a hand across his forehead. “We’ve been tracking this particular cleanup cell for three weeks. They were supposed to be locked down in New Jersey.”
“They had an inside contact at the municipal records office,” Dad replied, holstering his weapon and catching his breath. “Doesn't matter now. Look at your tablet, Miller.”
Miller pulled a ruggedized tablet from his trench coat, tapping the screen. His eyebrows shot up as the encrypted file transfer from Judge Harrison’s portal popped into view.
“An emergency writ of fraudulent conveyance,” Miller whispered, reading the digital seal. “Granted twenty minutes ago. This completely severs all corporate rider liability tied to the Vanguard holding trust.”
“It does more than that,” I added, stepping forward with the leather folder containing Daniel’s signed syndicate agreements. “This folder proves that Daniel Whitmore and Vance Sterling conspired to commit corporate fraud using counterfeit collateral. Every debt claim they tried to attach to my company is legally null and void.”
Miller took the folder, his expression turning from professional detachment to grim satisfaction. “Well, Ms. Hayes, I think you just turned your ex-husband’s financial trap into a federal coffin nail. He’s already facing twelve years. With these documents added to the indictment, he’ll be lucky to see parole before he’s sixty.”

“Send my regards to him when you read him the new charges,” I said coldly, turning toward the balcony doors where the morning sun was finally beginning to burn through the heavy river fog.
The nightmare was officially over. The last lingering shadow of my marriage had been permanently erased from the ledger.
