Chapter 18 - The Final Settlement

Two weeks later, the final civil divorce proceedings were wrapped up in a quiet, sunlit conference room on Madison Avenue.
There was no drama, no shouting, no smug lawyers trying to squeeze last-minute concessions from a broken settlement. Daniel’s court-appointed defense attorney looked exhausted, beaten down by the sheer weight of the federal indictments piling up against his client.
“Mr. Whitmore agrees to all terms of the amended decree,” the attorney said, sliding the final papers across the table without making eye contact. “He relinquishes all remaining claims to Vanguard Media, forfeits his share of the marital property, and accepts full financial liability for all outstanding personal debts.”
I picked up the heavy gold pen Dad had given me and signed my name at the bottom of the page with firm, deliberate strokes.
Emily Hayes.
No hyphen. No encumbrance. No looking back.
When I stepped out of the building onto Madison Avenue, the autumn air felt crisp and clean against my face. Dad was waiting by the curb, leaning against the fender of his truck with a warm, proud smile.
“Done?” he asked as I walked up to him.

“Done,” I said, holding up the signed copy of the decree.
“Good,” Dad said, opening the passenger door for me. “Now let’s go celebrate. I hear that little Italian bistro in Greenwich Village has the best espresso in the city.”
