The following Monday morning, the financial district of New York was bathed in crisp, autumn sunlight.

I sat at my desk on the top floor of Vanguard Media & Capital, sipping a cup of black coffee that Dad had brought up from the lobby. The office was quiet, save for the rhythmic clicking of keyboards and the distant hum of the trading floor downstairs.

On my desk sat a single, clean sheet of heavy bond paper—the newly minted corporate charter bearing my name alone, unburdened by hyphenated claims, fraudulent riders, or hidden debts.

My phone buzzed gently. A text from Dad: Breakfast downstairs in ten. Bring your balance sheet.

I smiled, locking my computer screen and picking up my jacket.

As I walked out of my office, I paused for a moment to look at the glass reflection in the hallway mirror. The woman looking back wasn't the shattered, grief-stricken divorcee who had sat on a cold courthouse bench outside Courtroom 6B months ago.
