Chapter 2 - THE WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHINGTwenty minutes later, I walked down the stairs, leaving Mom safely locked inside the guest suite with a secure panic button and a spare phone. The heavy scent of expensive perfume and cheap deceit filled the hallway.

Julian looked up from the kitchen island, his eyes narrowing slightly as he tried to read my expression. Chloe didn't even bother looking up from her phone.

"Well? Did you finally convince her to stop acting like a dramatic victim?" Julian asked, setting his wine glass down with a sharp clink. "She’s been a nightmare all week. Honestly, Elena, if you had to deal with her dementia every day, you’d understand why we have to be strict."

I walked over to the refrigerator, pulled out a bottle of ice-water, and unscrewed the cap deliberately slowly. I wanted them to feel every second of the psychological tension I was about to unleash.

"Strict," I repeated, letting the word hang in the air. "Is that what you call tying an elderly woman to a bed with nylon rope? Is that what you call fracturing her ribs because she asked for an accounting of her own bank statements?"

The kitchen went dead silent. The air pressure in the room seemed to drop by twenty degrees.

Julian’s color drained instantly, his smug facade cracking like cheap plaster. Chloe dropped her phone, the screen shattering against the tile floor.

"What... what did you say?" Julian stammered, standing up so fast his chair screeched backward against the floorboards. "Are you out of your mind? She’s been hallucinating! She falls over things because of her osteoporosis—!"

"Save the performance, Julian," I interrupted, my voice cutting through his denial like a razor blade. I stepped forward, closing the distance between us until he could see the absolute frost in my eyes. "The photos are backed up to three separate secure cloud servers. The medical report from the examining physician is already logged with the state medical board. And your forged power-of-attorney? It was flagged by the bank’s fraud division twenty minutes ago."

Chloe lunged forward, her face contorted in vicious fury. "You bitch! You calculated little bitch! You think you can walk in here and ruin everything we built? We sacrificed years for this house, for this money! That old hag is a senile liability!"

"Chloe, shut up!" Julian hissed, panic finally overriding his arrogance as he realized his wife had just confessed on an open mic. He whipped his head back toward me, his hands trembling. "Elena, listen to me. We can make a deal. We’ll split the second investment account. You take fifty grand, sign a non-disclosure agreement, and walk away. No one has to get hurt, your career stays clean—"

"My career?" I laughed, a sharp, humorless sound. "Julian, I am an Assistant Attorney General. My job isn't to make deals with domestic terrorists who prey on the elderly. My job is to put them away."

Before Julian could lunge for me, the front windows of the house suddenly shattered in a synchronized explosion of blinding light and deafening sound.

"FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT! DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!"
