Chapter 7 - BLOOMING IN THE SUNLIGHTSpring had returned to the countryside, painting the rolling hills in vibrant shades of emerald green and golden yellow. The oppressive, heavy atmosphere that once choked the old family house was entirely gone. Every curtain was wide open, welcoming streams of warm, golden sunlight into every room.

In the backyard garden, surrounded by blossoming rose bushes and the gentle hum of honeybees, Mom sat comfortably in a cushioned white wicker rocking chair. A soft woolen shawl draped over her shoulders—not to hide bruises or shield her from fear, but simply because the morning breeze was crisp and refreshing.

I walked out onto the wooden patio carrying a silver tray with two steaming cups of Earl Grey tea and a plate of freshly baked lemon scones.

Mom looked up, her eyes bright, clear, and sparkling with a vitality I hadn't seen in over a decade. The hollow, haunted look was completely gone, replaced by the warm, gentle grace that had always defined her character.

"You're spoiling me, Elena," Mom smiled gently, taking a cup from my hands and inhaling the fragrant steam. "Between you and the state investigators dropping by every week to check on my garden club schedule, I feel like a queen under armed guard."

I laughed, sitting down in the matching chair beside her and resting my hand over hers. Her skin was fragile, but her grip was steady and strong.

"Well, you earned royal status after surviving the dragon," I teased gently. "Besides, Judge Thorne sends his regards. He said the asset recovery fund successfully restituted every single penny Julian and Chloe tried to steal, plus full punitive damages. Your investment accounts are fully restored, and the lake cabin is back in your name."

Mom looked out over the sparkling expanse of the lawn, a peaceful sigh escaping her lips. "I never cared about the money, Elena. You know that. I only cared that the children I raised... that Julian forgot what love actually meant."

"He didn't forget, Mom," I said softly, looking out at the horizon where the sun warmed the earth. "He just chose greed over humanity. But he’s paying for that choice, and you are safe. That's all that matters."

"And what about you?" Mom asked, turning to look at me with deeply loving, perceptive eyes. "You put your life on hold, flew across the country, and fought a war to save me. When are you going to take a breath for yourself?"

I smiled, feeling a profound sense of peace settle deep within my soul. The storm had passed, the shadows had been swept away, and for the first time in a very long time, everything was exactly where it was supposed to be.

"I am right where I want to be, Mom," I whispered, raising my teacup in a quiet toast to the bright, unclouded future ahead. "Right here."
