Chapter 5 - THE CRUMBLING DEFENSESThe sunrise broke over the horizon like a jagged blade of light, cutting through the lingering storm clouds and casting a golden glow across the wet pavement outside the county holding facility.

Inside Interview Room 3, the fluorescent lights buzzed with an irritating, high-pitched frequency. Julian sat at the metal table, his expensive designer shirt wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his arrogant demeanor completely shattered. The cuffs around his wrists clinked rhythmically as he nervously tapped his fingers against the cold steel surface.

The heavy steel door swung open, and I walked in, carrying a single manila folder. I didn't sit across from him immediately; instead, I walked over to the one-way observation mirror, letting the silence stretch until Julian couldn't take it anymore.

"Elena... please," Julian croaked, his voice cracking. "You can't do this to your own brother. We share the same blood! Think of Mom—what will the family say? What will our friends think?"

I turned slowly, resting my hands on the back of the metal chair opposite him. I looked at the man who had shared my childhood, who had once helped me ride a bicycle and shared Christmases under this very roof, and felt nothing but cold detachment.

"The family will know that you are a criminal," I said evenly. "And our friends will find out that you beat an elderly woman and left her bruised and bound to a bed like an animal. As for blood, Julian? Blood stops mattering the moment you use it as leverage to inflict pain."

Julian swallowed hard, desperation flashing in his eyes. "Victor... Victor was the mastermind! He pushed me into it! He said the money was just sitting there, rotting! I didn't want to hurt Mom, Elena, I swear to God—"

"Stop lying," I snapped, tossing the folder onto the table. The pages spilled open, revealing full transcripts of his encrypted text messages with Chloe, laughing about how easy it was to manipulate Mom into signing over her properties. "Your partner in crime, Victor Vance, is currently sitting in holding cell 4. He sang like a canary the second we walked into his office. He gave us the access codes to every offshore account, every hidden safe deposit box, and every forged document with your signature on it."

Julian stared at the documents, his face turning an ash-gray color. The realization that there was no escape, no legal loophole, and no family bailout finally crushed his remaining spirit.

"You're looking at a minimum of fifteen years in federal penitentiary for elder abuse, wire fraud, identity theft, and financial extortion," I continued, my voice calm and merciless. "And Chloe? Because of her direct physical assault and extortion threats, she’s facing twenty. You traded your mother’s life, dignity, and safety for a few luxury cars and a waterfront condo. Was it worth it, Julian?"

Julian buried his face in his cuffed hands, his shoulders shaking with ragged, defeated sobs. But there were no tears of genuine remorse—only the bitter, desperate grief of a predator who had finally been caught in his own trap.
