Chapter 7 - THE EMPTY GRAVEThree days later, the private cemetery outside the city was bathed in the warm, golden light of late autumn.

The wind rustled through the dying leaves of the old oak trees. There were no politicians, no judges, no journalists, and no weeping crowds of sycophants. Just a small, quiet gathering standing before a polished granite headstone bearing Evelyn Hart’s name.

Adrian knelt in the damp grass. In his arms, baby Lily wore a little white dress embroidered with tiny silver flowers.

He placed a fresh bouquet of white carnations at the base of the headstone. Beside Evelyn’s grave was the smaller white casket that had held her hospital blanket for eight months—a symbol of a grief that had nearly broken him.

With a slow, deliberate movement, Adrian reached out, unlatched the clasps of the small white casket, and lifted the lid.

Inside lay the silver bracelet engraved with Lily’s name and the pink cap she had worn on the day she was born. He lifted the bracelet, kissed the cool metal, and slipped it gently around his daughter's tiny wrist.

“She’s alive, Ev,” Adrian whispered, his voice cracking slightly with emotion. “She has your eyes. And she’s going to grow up knowing what kind of world you wanted her to see.”

Grace stood a few steps back, holding an umbrella just in case the clouds rolled back in, while Thomas stood sentinel near the iron cemetery gates.

As Adrian stood up, adjusting Lily securely against his chest, a soft breeze swept across the cemetery, carrying the faint, sweet scent of spring blossoms—a phantom fragrance that seemed to whisper approval from the beyond.

Adrian took one last look at the headstone, turned his back on the past, and walked toward the waiting car.
