Chapter 8 - UNFINISHED BUSINESSSix months later.

The sun beat down warmly on the terracotta tiles of a secluded villa nestled high in the rolling hills of Tuscany, far away from the smog, rain, and concrete canyons of Chicago.

Olive groves stretched out toward the horizon, and the air was thick with the scent of rosemary and lemon trees.

On the shaded stone veranda, Adrian sat at a rustic wooden table, reviewing architectural blueprints for a local children's art foundation he was funding in Evelyn’s honor. Gone were the tailored black suits and the cold, impenetrable armor of a crime lord. He wore a simple linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing sun-browned skin and a relaxed posture that would have shocked anyone who knew him in his former life.

Inside the villa, soft laughter echoed through the open french doors.

Lily, now nearly two years old and running on sturdy little legs, chased a bright red ball across the polished terracotta floor, squealing with delight as Grace chased after her, laughing breathlessly.

Thomas stepped out onto the veranda, holding a sealed manila envelope in his good hand. He tossed it casually onto the wooden table.

“Courier from Zurich,” Thomas said, pulling out a chair and sitting down. “The last of Marcus’s offshore accounts has been successfully dismantled. Every cent has been funneled into the foundation.”

Adrian didn’t even look up from his blueprints. “And Marcus?”

“Federal penitentiary in maximum security,” Thomas replied, taking a sip of espresso. “Solitary confinement. He’ll have plenty of time to contemplate the cost of betrayal.”

Adrian nodded slowly, folding the blueprints. He looked out over the sun-drenched valley, watching a flock of birds soar across the azure sky.

“Good,” Adrian murmured.

Footsteps patted rapidly against the stone floor of the veranda.

“Papa!”

Adrian turned just in time as a blur of blonde curls and pink cotton slammed into his legs. He instantly dropped to one knee, wrapping his strong arms around little Lily, lifting her up into the air as she giggled uncontrollably, her tiny hands grabbing playfully at his hair.

“Look at you, running wild,” Adrian laughed, pressing a soft kiss to her cheek.

Grace walked out onto the veranda, wiping a bead of sweat from her forehead with a towel, smiling warmly at the two of them. “She’s impossible to keep up with today, Mr. Vale. I think she inherited your stubbornness.”

“Not my stubbornness, Grace,” Adrian said, smiling as Lily reached out and bopped him gently on the nose with her small fist. “She inherited her mother’s defiance.”
