Chapter 5 - Descent into the UndergroundThe concrete steps leading down to the abandoned subway entrance were slick with moss and grime. Elena’s foot slipped on the second step, sending a sharp jolt of pain up her ankle, but she caught herself against the rusted iron handrail, biting her lip so hard she tasted copper.

Behind her, muffled by the sound of the torrential rain, a single, sharp pop echoed from the alley.

Gunfire.

Elena didn't dare look back. She plunged downward into the pitch-black subterranean station, the stale smell of damp earth and rust replacing the clean sting of the rain. The station had been decommissioned back in the nineties, its platforms rotting and forgotten by the city above, but the labyrinth of tunnels beneath the streets was vast, sprawling, and maze-like.

She reached the bottom landing, her breath coming in ragged, painful gasps. Chloe was crying softly now, her small arms wrapped tightly around Elena's neck.

"Mommy, I'm cold... I want to go home," the little girl sobbed.

"We are going home, baby. Just a little further," Elena whispered, though she had no idea where home even was anymore.

She clicked on the small LED flashlight app on her cracked smartphone, casting a weak, flickering beam across the abandoned brick platform. Rusted tracks stretched out into the suffocating darkness on either side, vanishing into black tunnels that looked like the jaws of a leviathan.

Footsteps echoed from the top of the stairwell. Heavy, methodical boots descending the concrete steps. One pair, then two.

They were in the station.

Elena froze, extinguishing her phone's flashlight instantly. Total, suffocating darkness enveloped them. She backed away from the platform edge, pressing herself and her daughters flat against the damp, curved brick wall of a maintenance alcove.

"Thermal signature detected in sector four," a metallic, filtered voice crackled from a tactical radio somewhere above the platform. "Target is female, adult, carrying two juveniles. Moving deeper into the transit tunnels."

"Understood. Sweep the tracks. Leave no witnesses. The package must be secured."

A beam of a high-intensity tactical flashlight swept across the opposite platform, cutting through the gloom like a laser. The harsh white light danced dangerously close to Elena's hiding spot, illuminating the rusted rails and piles of rotting debris.

Elena held her breath, pressing her hand over Mia’s mouth to muffle any sound of breathing. Her heart was beating so violently she was certain the men in tactical gear could hear it echoing off the curved walls.

Then, a sudden, loud clatter echoed from the far end of the tunnel to their left—the sound of a metal pipe rolling across the concrete tracks.

"Movement! Sector six!" one of the agents shouted over the radio.

The bright flashlight beams instantly pivoted away from Elena’s alcove, swinging toward the distant noise as both tactical agents sprinted down the tracks into the gloom, their boots splashing heavily in the standing water.

Elena didn't waste a second. She grabbed Chloe’s hand and urged a drowsy Mia forward, slipping out of the alcove and diving into the gaping mouth of a parallel drainage tunnel that ran deeper beneath the city streets.
