Chapter 7 - The Director's LedgerOn the screen, a high-definition satellite feed displayed an opulent, rain-slicked penthouse suite overlooking Central Park. Seated behind a massive mahogany desk was a silver-haired man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, casually sipping a glass of scotch while watching the exact same thermal feed of the subway station Elena had just escaped from.

"Who is that?" Elena whispered, the anger instantly replaced by a sickening dread.

"That is Director Thomas Vance," David said, standing up from his chair. He walked over to a secure terminal and tapped a few keys, bringing up a glowing dossier stamped with top-secret classification seals. "Head of clandestine operations for the Department of Defense. And the man who has been quietly liquidating every single auditor who stumbled across his off-the-books slush fund."

Elena stared at the dossier. "You didn't just steal from the Russian mob, David... You stole from the government."

"I stole from him," David corrected grimly. "Three billion dollars siphoned from black-budget defense contracts into private offshore accounts. Vance used that money to fund illegal off-shore proxy wars, black-site interrogations, and domestic surveillance programs. When I found the paper trail two years ago, I copied the entire master ledger onto an encrypted drive and hid it."

"And you thought involving us—involving our children—was the best way to keep us safe?!" Elena's voice rose, a sharp edge of hysteria cutting through her words. "You left us starving, homeless, running for our lives from men with machine guns!"

"I left you because my phone was tapped and my office was bugged the day I downloaded the files," David shouted back, stepping closer, his own composure finally cracking. "The only reason you and the girls weren't eliminated six months ago is because Vance thought I burned the data along with my body in that warehouse fire! As long as he believed I was dead, you were invisible!"

"Well, we aren't invisible anymore!" Elena fired back, pointing a shaking finger toward the monitors where the tactical teams were now swarming the outside of the subterranean access tunnel. "They tracked Arthur. They tracked the suitcase. They are right outside that door, David!"

David’s expression hardened. He didn't look panicked; he looked resigned—like a man who had known this moment was coming for a very long time.

He walked over to the heavy steel workbench in the corner of the room, picking up a rugged military-grade detonator wired with a small red LED light.

"They aren't going to get the ledger," David said quietly.

Elena’s eyes widened as she connected the dots. "What did you do?"

"This entire facility—every server rack, every hard drive, every file—is wired with five hundred pounds of C-4," David said, turning to face her with a heartbreakingly tender smile. "When I press this button, the whole tunnel system collapses. No data. No evidence. No leverage."

"And us?!" Elena screamed, grabbing his jacket collar. "What about us, David?! We're still down here!"

Before David could answer, a deafening explosion echoed through the outer corridor.
