Chapter 9 - The Train to NowhereThe rain was still pouring over the city, turning the asphalt into a shimmering mirror reflecting the neon signs of the downtown district.

Elena burst out of the street-level utility hatch behind the abandoned transit hub, gasping for fresh air as she clutched Chloe in one arm and held Mia’s hand tightly with the other. The heavy brown suitcase thumped against her leg as she dragged it behind her, every muscle in her body aching, her clothes soaked and stained with mud.

She didn't look back. She couldn't.

With the small silver key clutched safely in her fist, she navigated the crowded, rain-slicked platforms of Union Station just as the midnight express train bound for the Canadian border announced its final boarding call.

The terminal was bustling with late-night commuters rushing through the turnstiles, completely oblivious to the exhausted, bedraggled woman and her two young daughters stepping quietly onto the train.

Elena slumped into a worn fabric seat near the back of the nearly empty passenger car, pulling Chloe and Mia close against her side. The train doors slid shut with a pneumatic hiss, and the heavy engine began to hum beneath their feet, slowly pulling away from the platform and out into the dark, rain-swept wilderness of the north.

She looked down at the battered brown suitcase resting on the floor between her feet. The leather was scuffed, the brass latches tarnished, but inside was their ticket to a new life—a ghost existence bought with blood, secrets, and a husband's ultimate sacrifice.

Chloe rested her head against Elena’s shoulder, her eyelids drooping. "Mommy... are we going to see Daddy again?"

Elena swallowed the lump in her throat, fighting back the fresh wave of tears stinging her eyes. She stared out the rain-streaked window of the train as the city skyline faded into the dark horizon.

"Yes, baby," Elena whispered softly, smoothing the damp hair away from her daughter's forehead. "Someday."

The train accelerated into the night, carrying them away from the wreckage of their past and into an uncertain, terrifying, but entirely free future.
