Chapter 8 - The Final Stand"Dad! Mommy!"

Little Chloe woke up screaming, scrambling off the pallet and running toward Elena. Elena scooped her up instantly, pulling both Chloe and a dazed Mia into a tight, protective huddle in the far corner of the server room.

"Stay down! Cover your ears!" Elena yelled over the blaring red alarm klaxons that suddenly began to wail throughout the underground bunker.

The steel security door buckled inward with a groaning screech of stressed metal, blowing completely off its reinforced concrete anchors. Smoke billowed into the room as three heavily armed tactical operatives flooded through the breach, their weapons raised and sweeping the room with laser sights.

"Target sighted! Secure the terminal! Terminate all civilian assets!" the lead operative barked through his comm-link.

David didn't hesitate. He lunged across the central desk, slamming his palm directly onto the red button of the military-grade detonator.

CLICK.

For a split second, nothing happened. The operatives raised their rifles toward David, their fingers tightening on the triggers.

Then, a low, rumbling bass wave vibrated through the floorboards, shaking dust and chunks of concrete from the ceiling.

RUMBLE-BOOM!

Explosions cascaded down the outer drainage tunnels in a thunderous chain reaction, blowing out the reinforced concrete walls and sealing the primary entry points in tons of jagged rubble and collapsed stone. The tactical operatives were thrown violently backward off their feet as the floor buckled beneath them, swallowed by the collapsing subterranean bedrock.

Sparks showered down from the overhead electrical conduits as the facility's power grid failed completely, plunging the bunker into pitch-black darkness save for the strobing red emergency backup lights.

"David!" Elena screamed, clutching the girls as debris rained down around them.

"Over here! Grab my hand!"

David’s voice cut through the chaos. He appeared out of the swirling smoke, grabbing Elena’s arm and dragging her toward a secondary emergency escape hatch tucked behind one of the heavy server racks—a narrow vertical shaft leading straight up to street level.

"The ladder! Climb, Elena! Now!" David shouted, hoisting Chloe up into the dark metal rungs of the vertical shaft.

"I'm not leaving you behind!" Elena cried, looking back as David shoved the heavy brown suitcase into the bottom of the shaft alongside them.

"I have to buy you time," David said, his voice eerily calm. He pressed a small metallic override key into her palm, closing her fingers tightly around it. "This key opens a safety deposit box at Union Station downtown. Inside is new identities, passports, and enough untaxed cash to disappear anywhere in the world. Use it."

"David, no—"

"I love you, Elena. I've loved you every second I've been running," David whispered, pressing a fierce, desperate kiss to her forehead before pushing her backward up the ladder.

He slammed the heavy steel floor hatch shut above them and threw the deadbolt from the inside, trapping himself in the collapsing bunker below as the heavy rumble of the cave-in consumed the lower levels.
