Chapter 16 - The Ashes of Empire

Dawn broke over a secluded private harbor three hundred miles north of Miami, where the fast boat finally sputtered to a halt against an old wooden pier.
Federal agents and local maritime police were already waiting, having been alerted by Julian’s automated emergency distress beacon. But there was no sign of Julian.
For three agonizing days, Sarah sat in a sterile safehouse provided by the FBI, clutching a sleeping Leo while Lily slept fitfully on the cot beside her. She refused food. She refused sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, she heard the echo of gunfire on the clifftop and the sound of the explosion shattering the study.
On the fourth morning, the heavy wooden door of the safehouse swung open.
Sarah stood up so fast her knees buckled.
Julian walked in. He was wearing a blood-stained tactical vest over a torn black shirt. His left arm was wrapped in heavy white gauze, a deep slash ran across his cheek, and he looked exhausted, battered, and older than time itself—but he was walking under his own power.
"Julian!"
Sarah crossed the room in a single breathless sprint and threw herself into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably against his chest. Julian caught her, burying his face in her hair, his massive shoulders shaking as he held her with a fierce, unbreakable grip.
"I'm here," Julian choked out, his voice hoarse and raw. "I'm right here, Sarah. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
"How?" Sarah pulled back, tracing the fresh scars on his face with trembling fingers. "How did you get out?"
"The European council sent their best," Julian said grimly, looking down at her with eyes full of a fierce, eternal devotion. "They blew the study. They thought I was trapped in the vault. But I blew the lower munitions cache and dove off the cliff into the surf before the roof collapsed. It took me two days to hike through the marshes to the extraction point."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, charred silver locket—the only thing left of his old life. He tossed it through the open window into the rushing river below.
"It's over," Julian whispered, pulling her back into his arms. "The empire is gone. Every account is frozen, every asset is seized, and the survivors are locked up in federal custody. We are ghosts, Sarah. We are finally free."
