Chapter 5 - The Weaponized Past

The custody hearing was only four days away, and the pressure inside Sarah was reaching a boiling point. Julian had kept his promise: he had retained Marcus Vance, widely considered the most ruthless and expensive family law attorney in the state of Illinois. Vance had already dismantled Gary’s initial filings, uncovering a trail of hidden assets and corporate tax evasion that made Gary’s lawyer look like an amateur playing poker with a deck of blank cards.

Yet, Sarah couldn't shake the dread gnawing at her stomach.

She sat in the estate’s private library, surrounded by leather-bound volumes that smelled of old paper and beeswax, staring at a stack of financial printouts Vance had dropped off.

The door opened silently, and Julian walked in carrying two mugs of steaming chamomile tea. He set one down on the mahogany desk in front of her.

"You're not sleeping," Julian said, leaning back against the edge of the desk, his long legs crossed at the ankle.

"How can I sleep?" Sarah rubbed her temples, feeling a blinding migraine building behind her eyes. "Gary filed an emergency addendum this afternoon. He’s claiming I abandoned our daughter, that I’m unstable, and—worst of all—he’s brought up the audit from my old job."

Julian narrowed his eyes. "The one where your boss tried to frame you?"

"Yes," Sarah sighed bitterly. "Even though the charges were dropped and the FBI arrested my boss for money laundering, Gary’s lawyer is twisting the narrative. They’re painting me as a corporate criminal who was mixed up in syndicate finance. The judge is old-school, Julian. If he hears the word 'syndicate' or 'money laundering,' even in a dismissed context, he’ll rule against me out of an abundance of caution."

Julian picked up his tea mug, staring into the amber liquid. A slow, dangerous smile crept across his lips—not a warm smile, but the expression of a chess grandmaster who just realized his opponent had walked directly into a mating net.

"Let him bring it up," Julian said softly.

Sarah looked up, bewildered. "Are you insane? If that comes into court—"

"It won't hurt you," Julian interrupted, turning to face her fully. "Because your old boss didn't just get arrested by the FBI, Sarah. He was working for a shell company owned by a subsidiary of a holding corporation."

Sarah’s breath caught. "Which is?"

"Mine," Julian said calmly. "And the man who forced your boss to falsify those documents wasn't you. It was Vincent."

Sarah stared at him, the pieces snapping together with terrifying clarity. "You... you knew about this before you even brought me here?"

"I know everything that happens in Chicago," Julian said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate register as he stepped closer to her chair. "When my investigators brought me your file on the night of November fourteenth, I didn't just see a desperate mother. I saw a woman who refused to compromise her integrity even when my own cousin threatened to ruin her life."

He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her forehead. The touch sent a violent, electric shock down Sarah’s spine. She froze, her breath catching in her throat as she looked up into those dark, fathomless eyes.

"You protect my son," Julian whispered, his face inches from hers. "Let me protect you."
