Chapter 4 - The Predator’s Dinner

By the end of her first week at the estate, Sarah realized that living with the most dangerous man in Chicago was vastly different from reading about him in the Chicago Tribune. Julian Moretti was a creature of absolute, ruthless control, yet in the nursery, he was a student desperately learning a language he had never been taught.

He watched her every move. When she burped Leo, Julian memorized the angle of her wrist. When she prepared the evening bottles, he noted the exact brand of organic formula and the precise temperature of the water.

Yet, the outside world did not stop spinning just because a mob boss had hired an accountant to babysit.

On a rainy Thursday evening, the heavy oak doors of the dining room swung open to reveal a visitor who brought a completely different kind of danger into the house. Vincent "The Hook" Moretti—Julian’s older cousin and the head of the syndicate's dock operations—strode into the room uninvited, trailing the smell of expensive bourbon and cheap cigars.

"Julian," Vincent barked, laughing loudly as he tossed his wet trench coat onto an antique velvet chair. "I hear you’ve turned the fortress into a damn nursery. Word on the South Side is you’ve got some random civilian living here—a charity case with a kid."

Sarah was sitting quietly at the edge of the long mahogany dining table, spooning a light broth, while Leo slept soundly in a bassinet beside her. She froze at Vincent’s tone.

Julian didn't look up from his steak. He cut a precise piece of meat, chewed slowly, and set his cutlery down with a soft clink against the china.

"Watch your mouth, Vincent," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "You’re standing in my house. And you’re speaking about my guest."

"Guest?" Vincent sneered, stepping closer to the table and casting a predatory glance in Sarah’s direction. He was a thickset man with cold, watery blue eyes and a scar that ran from his earlobe down to his jawline. "She looks like a stray cat you picked up off the street. What’s she doing here, doll? Teaching the Capo how to change diapers?"

Sarah stood up slowly, her chair scraping against the hardwood floor. Before she could open her mouth to put the thug in his place, Julian was already standing.

He didn't yell. He didn't rush. He simply crossed the space between them with terrifying speed, grabbed Vincent by the lapels of his silk suit, and slammed him against the solid oak door with a force that rattled the chandelier overhead.

"You don't talk to her," Julian whispered, his face inches from Vincent’s, his eyes burning with an incandescent rage. "You don't look at her. And if you ever step foot in this house uninvited again, I won't just throw you out on the street. Do you understand me?"

Vincent’s bravado evaporated instantly. He swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he grabbed Julian’s wrists. "Easy, Julian... just bustin' chops. I get it."

Julian shoved him back, straightening his own cuffs with cold precision. "Get out."

Vincent stumbled toward the exit, casting one last, venomous look at Sarah before vanishing into the night.

The dining room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. Sarah stood by her chair, her heart hammering. She looked at Julian, seeing the ruthless monster the streets whispered about standing right in front of her.

"You didn't have to do that," Sarah whispered.

"Yes," Julian said, turning his dark eyes back to her, his expression unreadable. "I did."
