Chapter 20 - The Forever After

The sun dipped below the horizon of the Pacific, painting the California sky in bruised shades of violet, gold, and deep crimson.
On the back deck of their home, the entire family had gathered. Lily was chasing the dog across the lawn, her laughter carrying on the crisp evening breeze, while little Leo sat proudly on Julian’s shoulders, holding a toy steering wheel and pretending to captain a massive ship through imaginary storms.
Sarah stood on the porch, leaning against the wooden railing, holding a warm mug of tea. She watched her husband—the man the Chicago streets had whispered about in terror, the ruthless Capo dei Capi who had burned down an empire just to keep her safe—laughing as his son pulled playfully at his hair.
Julian caught her eye across the lawn. He lowered Leo gently to the grass, whispered something to the children that made them both giggle, and walked up the porch steps toward her.
The rain began to fall softly—a gentle, rhythmic patter against the wooden roof, completely unlike the heavy, leaden storm of that night on Halsted Street four years ago.
Julian stopped right in front of her. He reached out, his warm, strong hands cupping her face, tilting her chin upward so she had no choice but to lose herself in those dark, fathomless eyes.
"What are you thinking about?" Julian whispered, his thumb gently tracing her cheekbone.

"I was thinking," Sarah smiled, her eyes shining with tears of absolute, unadulterated joy, "that the mafia boss’s baby finally stopped crying. And the single mom finally found her home."
Julian smiled—a radiant, untroubled smile that belonged only to her—and kissed her lips as the rain washed the world clean around them, sealing their story in a love that time, shadows, and empires could never break.
