Chapter 18 - The Unwritten Page

Life in Carmel was peaceful, but it was also wonderfully, beautifully mundane—something Julian had never experienced in his forty years of existence.

He had traded his multi-million-dollar shipping empire for a quiet partnership in a local maritime salvage business and a stake in the community bookstore downtown. He wore flannel instead of custom Italian wool, and his hands, once stained with the dark politics of the Chicago underworld, were now calloused from building treehouses and fixing bicycles for his children.

One evening in late autumn, after Lily and Leo had finally gone to sleep, Sarah sat at the wooden desk in their study, going over the local accounts for the community center she now directed.

Julian walked in carrying two glasses of wine, setting one down beside her laptop. He looked down at the paperwork scattered across the desk—budget sheets, volunteer lists, and receipts for children’s books.

"You're working late," Julian said gently, leaning against the edge of the desk.

"Just finalizing the winter charity drive," Sarah smiled, looking up at him. "We're sponsoring twenty single mothers this year, helping them with rent and legal aid so they don't lose their kids."

Julian’s dark eyes softened with an emotion so deep it took her breath away. He reached out, his warm fingers brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "You never stopped being a rescuer, did you?"

"I learned it from the best," Sarah replied, standing up to wrap her arms around his neck. "Though your teaching methods were a bit unorthodox."

Julian laughed softly, pulling her flush against his chest. "If I had known that walking into Giovani’s restaurant on November fourteenth would lead to this... I would have torn the city apart to find you ten years sooner."

May you like

"You almost did," Sarah whispered, resting her head against his steady, beating heart.

"And I'd do it again," Julian murmured into her hair. "In every lifetime."
