Chapter 16 - The Digital SignatureDante didn't flinch. He didn't reach for his gun, and he didn't look toward the private elevator bank where the soft chime was already beginning to echo through the penthouse.

Ding.

The elevator doors slid open with a smooth, frictionless hiss. Four men in dark federal windbreakers stepped out into the black marble foyer, their badges gleaming under the recessed lighting, their hands resting uncomfortably close to their holstered sidearms.

The lead agent—a tall, sharp-featured man with graying hair named Miller—stepped forward, his eyes scanning the room until they locked onto Dante standing by the mahogany desk.

"Dante Vance," Miller said, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "Put your hands where I can see them. You're under arrest for federal racketeering, conspiracy, and wire fraud."

Marcus Vance smiled, taking another slow sip of his bourbon. He didn't look at the agents; he looked straight at Dante, his eyes glittering with triumphant malice. "It's been a long time coming, Dante. Hand over the keys to the estate. It's the least you can do for the family."

Dante slowly pulled his hands out of his coat pockets. He didn't raise them in surrender. Instead, he reached into his inner breast pocket, pulled out a small, heavy silver flash drive, and tossed it carelessly across the mahogany desk. It landed with a soft clack right in the middle of Marcus's pristine legal papers.

Marcus frowned, looking down at the flash drive. "What is this?"

"That," Dante said, his voice entirely steady, "is a complete, unencrypted record of every offshore wire transfer, every shell corporation, and every bribe paid to federal judges and port commissioners by Vance & Associates over the past twelve years."

Marcus’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "That's... that's impossible. Those files are encrypted on my private server in Zurich."

"Your private server in Zurich was seized by Interpol at eleven-fifteen tonight," Dante replied, turning his head slightly to acknowledge Agent Miller with a brief, professional nod. "Agent Miller didn't come here to arrest me, Marcus. He came here to pick up the evidence."

Agent Miller walked past Marcus’s desk, ignored the lawyer's stunned expression, and picked up the silver flash drive with a gloved hand. He slotted it into a small diagnostic reader he pulled from his windbreakers pocket, staring down at the green scrolling code for three seconds before looking up at Marcus.

"Marcus Vance," Miller said, his voice dropping into the flat, official cadence of the federal indictment. "You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, laundering syndicate funds through federal accounts, and conspiracy to commit murder."

Marcus leaped to his feet, his face turning a mottled, furious purple, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the mahogany desk. "You can't do this! I am the senior partner! I have the signed authorizations!"

"You have authorizations signed with a digital key that was revoked and cloned three years ago," Dante said, stepping right up to the desk until he was looking down into the old lawyer's terrified eyes. "You forgot one fundamental rule of the business, Marcus."

"What... what rule?" Marcus hissed, his voice cracking.

"A dead man doesn't sign checks," Dante said softly. "And a ghost doesn't leave fingerprints."

Before Marcus could reach for the panic button or the heavy brass paperweight on his desk, Paolo and two federal agents moved in from the shadows of the doorway. The silver steel of handcuffs clicked shut around Marcus’s wrists with a sharp, brutal snap that echoed off the glass walls like a gunshot.
