Chapter 20 - The Tide That Never RecedesThe sun began its slow, magnificent descent toward the western cliffs, painting the sky in violent shades of amber, violet, and gold that bled across the surface of the bay like spilled wine.

On the terrace, the sewing machine was quiet.

Elena and Dante sat side by side on the stone balustrade, watching Lily chase the fading sunlight across the manicured lawn until the little girl finally collapsed into the soft grass, exhausted by the day, her red-soled boots kicking happily in the air before she curled up into a ball beside the terrier and fell fast asleep under the cooling evening breeze.

Dante reached into the pocket of his linen trousers. He pulled out a small, worn leather wallet—the same one that had hit the tile floor of the grocery store six months ago, its corners scuffed, its gold crest slightly faded by the passage of time and the salt air.

He didn't open it. He simply turned it over in his hands once, twice, before holding it out toward Elena on the flat of his palm.

"You still carry that around?" she asked, her voice laced with a quiet, affectionate disbelief. "There's nothing in it except an old photograph and a grocery receipt for two bruised bananas."

"There's everything in it," Dante corrected softly. "It's the receipt for the best investment I ever made."

Elena smiled, shaking her head as she took the wallet from his hand and slipped it back into the pocket of her linen dress.

"You're incorrigible, Dante Vance."

"I told you," he said, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and drawing her close against his side as the first stars began to pierce the purple velvet of the evening sky. "I'm a hard man to lose."
