Chapter 29 - The Return Through the MistThe Gulfstream IV touched down on the private airstrip behind the headland villa just as the sun was dipping below the western ridge, painting the sky in violent streaks of purple and burnt orange.

Dante stepped out of the cabin into the crisp evening air, the salt-heavy wind hitting him like an old friend. Paolo followed with the bags, his face expressionless, carrying the titanium flash drive in a secure metal case locked to his wrist.
They didn't take the car from the tarmac. Dante walked the half-mile up the winding coastal path through the pine trees, his boots crunching softly on the needle-strewn gravel, until the massive iron gates of the estate came into view.
They were open—not wide, just enough for a single person to pass through.
As he crossed the threshold into the courtyard, he saw her.
Elena was sitting on the edge of the stone fountain, her dark hair catching the amber light of the courtyard lanterns, watching Lily chase a firefly across the manicured lawn. The little girl was holding a small glass jar with a perforated lid, laughing as the tiny insect blinked its yellow light against the glass.
When Elena heard the crunch of gravel, she turned her head. She didn't run across the yard; she stood up slowly, her hands resting on the edge of the stone basin, her dark eyes searching his face as he walked toward her through the twilight.
Dante stopped three feet away. He didn't smile, but the hard, gray exhaustion that had defined him for the past forty-eight hours had vanished, replaced by a quiet, settled stillness.
"You're back early," Elena said, her voice soft against the sound of the surf below the cliffs. "The Geneva board meeting must have gone well."
"The Swiss banks are very cooperative when you present them with the right documentation," Dante said. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the small titanium flash drive, and held it out to her on the flat of his palm.
Elena looked down at the metal stick, then up into his eyes. "What is this?"
"It's your inheritance," Dante said quietly. "And your closure. Sal is sitting in a white villa in Montevideo with no money, no network, and no way to ever touch this family again."
Elena didn't take the flash drive immediately. She reached out, her fingers brushing his wrist until they found the spot where his skin met his cuff, her thumb tracing the line of his pulse.
"Is it really over, Dante?" she whispered, the last remaining shadow of doubt finally dissolving from her voice.
"It's over," he said, wrapping his hand around hers, his fingers locking securely over hers with an unbreakable grip. "The past is buried. We only have the road ahead."

From across the lawn, Lily came running toward them, her red-soled boots kicking up grass clippings, holding the glass jar aloft like a trophy.
"Mama! Dante! Look! I caught a star!"
