Chapter 2 - THE SURGEON'S CUT

The harsh overhead LED lights of the kitchen seemed to magnify every detail of my agony. The screen of my shattered phone glinted like broken glass diamonds near my foot.
"Ma'am? Can you hear me?"
The voice belonged to a female medic who had dropped to her knees beside me, her hands already opening a heavy trauma pack. Her face was tense with professional focus. "I'm paramedic Vance. We've got a secure priority uplink to Washington. Stay with me."
"My... my baby..." I gasped, tears hot and blinding as a sharp wave of cramping tore through my lower abdomen. The sheer stress of David's sudden violence, combined with hours of being forced to slave away over a holiday dinner while he entertained his snobbish parents, had brought my body to a terrifying breaking point.
"You're going to be fine. The Chief Justice has already dispatched a medical helicopter—it's touching down on the private golf course three blocks away right now," the medic said firmly, cutting away my sleeve with surgical shears to establish an IV line.
From the doorway, Sylvia’s voice cut through the air, shrill and indignant, trying to salvage a shred of her crumbling reality.
"This is completely absurd! David, call your managing partner right now! Call the local police chief! They can't just barge into our home like common criminals over a domestic spat!" Sylvia hissed, stepping into the kitchen, her eyes wide with displaced fury rather than concern. She looked down at me with venomous disdain. "She’s just faking it for attention. Trying to ruin your career because she's jealous of your success!"
The lead marshal stepped into the kitchen, his heavy boots squeaking on the tile. He turned his head slowly, looking at Sylvia as if she were a specimen under a microscope.

"Ma'am, keep your distance," the marshal warned, his voice dangerously low. "Interfering with a federal protective detail operating under the direct authority of the Supreme Court is a felony offense. Step back into the living room, or you will be joining your son in cuffs."
Sylvia gasped, clutching her pearls so tightly her knuckles turned white. "My son is a rising star partner at Sterling & Caldwell! You can't treat us like this! Do you know who David’s father-in-law is—wait..." She stopped, her brain finally connecting the terrifying dots. "The Chief Justice... is her father?"
