Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF STERLING & CALDWELL

By 8:00 PM, the news had already broken through the legal blogging networks and reached the front pages of major national news outlets.
EMERGENCY FEDERAL INTERVENTION: RISING CORPORATE LITIGATOR ARRESTED AT HOME FOLLOWING SUPREME COURT CHIEF JUSTICE’S DIRECT INTERVENTION.
Inside the glass-and-steel monolith downtown where Sterling & Caldwell occupied the top five floors, absolute panic reigned. Managing Partner Arthur Sterling—no relation to my father, but a man who had built his firm’s reputation on ruthless corporate aggression—was pacing his corner office like a caged tiger.
His desk phone was lit up like a Christmas tree. Calls from board members, terrified corporate clients threatening to pull their accounts, and federal investigators requesting immediate access to billing records were flooding every line.
"What do you mean his partnership is revoked?!" Arthur roared into the phone, his face purple with rage as he yelled at the firm’s head of human resources. "You can't just strip a named equity partner based on an unverified tip from a federal judge!"
"Arthur, you don't understand," the HR director’s voice trembled over the line. "It’s not just a tip. The Federal Reserve, the SEC, and the IRS have all simultaneous flag-audited our main trust accounts. The documents came directly encrypted from the Supreme Court administrative server. If we don't cut David loose immediately, the entire firm will be indicted for systematic billing fraud by midnight."
Before Arthur could reply, the heavy double doors of his executive suite blasted open.
Three federal agents in dark suits strode into the room without knocking, flashing credentials that bore the highest level of clearance the Department of Justice could issue.

"Arthur Sterling? I’m Special Agent Vance, DOJ Financial Crimes Unit. We have a federal subpoena for every physical and digital record concerning David Caldwell’s client portfolios, offshore shell corporations, and internal firm communications over the last four years. Put your hands on the desk, and unlock your terminal."
Arthur’s mouth dropped open. The mighty titan of corporate litigation felt the exact same chilling sensation that his star pupil David had felt an hour earlier in the kitchen: the terrifying weight of absolute, unyielding justice.
