Chapter 7 - THE HOSPITAL WARD

High above the sparkling lights of Washington, D.C., the private VIP recovery suite at Georgetown University Medical Center was bathed in a soft, warm glow.

The monitors beside my bed hummed with a steady, rhythmic beep, tracking my vital signs and confirming the reassuring heartbeat of my baby, who had miraculously weathered the storm safely.

The door clicked open softly.

My father stepped into the room. He had removed his heavy wool overcoat, but he still wore his tailored dark suit, looking every bit the towering legal icon he was. Yet, as he walked toward my bedside, the fierce, unyielding intensity in his eyes melted into a profound, aching tenderness.

He didn't say a word at first. He simply pulled up a chair beside the bed, sat down, and gently took my hand in his warm, steady grip.

"The doctors say everything is stable," my father said softly, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. "The baby is strong. You're going to be fine, Anna."

"I knew you'd come, Dad," I whispered, a tear slipping down my cheek and catching in the light.

"I told you the day you married that arrogant fool that if he ever brought you a single tear, he would answer to the full extent of human law," my father replied, lifting his gaze to meet mine with a fierce, protective glint. "He thought because I was a judge, I was bound by decorum. He forgot that before I wore the robes, I was a father. And a father's duty to protect his child supersedes every statute ever written."

"What happens to him now?" I asked quietly.

My father gave a faint, chilling smile—the smile of a master chess player who had just executed a checkmate in three moves.

"David is currently sitting in a federal holding cell awaiting arraignment tomorrow morning. His bail has been set at five million dollars—cash only—with no surety bonds accepted, specifically to ensure he stays behind bars. His firm is collapsing under a federal indictment, his license to practice law is being permanently disbarred by unanimous vote of the appellate panel, and his mother’s precious social circle has already locked their gates against her."

He paused, squeezing my hand a little tighter.

"As for you, my dear... you are finally free. And whatever path you choose to take next, you will never, ever have to cower in fear again."
