She discovered that Edward Hale was not just lonely; he was suffering from a rapidly progressing form of early-onset dementia. The "sadness" the twins saw was the confusion of a man losing the map of his own memories.
She found him sitting on a park bench, feeding birds the bread he’d saved from dinner. He didn't recognize her at first.
"Who are you?" he asked, his eyes vacant.
