When Clara arrived, she found not a gala, but Edward sitting in the sunroom, struggling to remember how to play a game of checkers with Sophia and Lily.
"He’s sick, Clara," Abby said, standing by the door. "He isn't the man who hurt you. He’s a man who has forgotten who he is, and yet, he still remembers that he loves you."
Clara stood in the doorway, trembling. She watched her father laugh at something Lily said, a sound of genuine, childlike joy.
