Chapter 1 - The Fall of the Mask

The silver platter in Elena’s hand didn't tremble. Not a single muscle in her posture betrayed the fact that just twenty-four hours ago, she had been a shadow living in the deepest trenches of the corporate underworld.

The ballroom of the Grand Carlisle Hotel plunged into an absolute, suffocating silence. Victoria Vance, the untouchable heiress of Vance Global Enterprises, was currently pinned to the Italian marble floor, gasping for air as the cold rim of a silver tray pressed lightly against the back of her neck.

"Guards! Security!" shrieked a socialite in the front row, clutching her diamond necklace as if Elena were about to rob the entire room.

Two burly security personnel in tailored tuxedos rushed forward, their walkie-talkies crackling with panic. But before they could take another step, Elena raised her free hand. She didn't yell. She didn't flinch. She simply turned her gaze toward them—a chilling, tactical stare that made both veteran guards freeze in their tracks. It was the look of a predator who had just decided to play with her food.

"Step closer," Elena said, her voice cutting through the dead air like a scalpel, "and I’ll show you why this silver tray isn’t just for hors d'oeuvres."

Victoria thrashed beneath her, her designer gown ruined by red wine and floor dust. "Do you know who I am?!" she screamed, her voice cracking with humiliation. "My father owns this hotel! He owns this city! You’re just a hired hand! A peasant!"

Elena slowly lifted the tray and stepped back, giving Victoria room to scramble up. But the heiress didn't look victorious; she looked deranged. She scrambled to her feet, wiping a streak of makeup and wine across her cheek, her chest heaving.

"You're fired!" Victoria shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at Elena's chest. "You're going to prison! I’ll make sure you never work another day in this country—"

"Quiet, Victoria."

A deep, velvet voice echoed from the private VIP balcony overlooking the mezzanine. The entire room turned as one.

Standing at the railing was Julian Vance—Victoria’s older brother, and the reclusive, ruthless billionaire who actually ran the empire. His sharp eyes weren't looking at his hysterical sister. They were locked entirely on Elena.

Julian slowly set down his crystal glass, his expression unreadable. "Show's over, everyone," he announced smoothly. "Dinner will resume in the east wing. Victoria, my office. Now."

Victoria’s face drained of color. "Julian, she attacked me! She—"

"I said, now."

As the crowd slowly dispersed, casting terrified glances at the anonymous caterer, Julian descended the grand staircase. He stopped a few feet away from Elena, looking down at the red stains on her white uniform.

"You move like a ghost, Elena," Julian said softly, loud enough for only her to hear. "I thought you retired from the shadows."

Elena wiped a drop of wine from her cheek, her lips curving into a dangerous smile. "I did, Julian. But some people just keep begging to be taught a lesson."
