Chapter 10 - CHECKMATE IN THE DARKJonathan Vance stepped forward into the dim light of the boathouse, his eyes gleaming with mad triumph.

“Did you really think a few government audits and a hostile corporate takeover could bring down an empire that took fifty years to build?” Jonathan sneered, his gaze locking directly onto mine. “You played your part brilliantly, Audrey. You married my worthless grandson, you cleared out the corrupt deadwood from the board, and you delivered the entire corporate structure right into my hands, completely free of federal scrutiny.”
I stood my ground, my fingers curling tightly into fists inside the pockets of my tactical coat. Despite the dozen assault rifles pointed directly at my chest, my voice remained ice-cold.
“You sacrificed your own son and grandson just to reset your criminal syndicate?” I challenged, raising my chin.
“Dominic was a fool. A pawn who outlived his usefulness,” Jonathan laughed coldly, raising his hand to signal his men. “And you, my dear, were the final piece of the puzzle. Once you sign over the remaining voting rights under duress, this island will become your permanent, inescapable grave.”
Marcus lunged forward in a desperate bid to tackle his father, but two armed guards instantly intercepted him, driving the butt of a rifle into his stomach and sending him crashing to the ground.
“Marcus!” I shouted, making a move toward him.
“Don’t bother, Audrey,” Jonathan smiled, stepping closer and pulling a sleek, encrypted digital tablet from his coat. He held it out toward me, the screen displaying a final, irrevocable transfer document. “Sign your life away. It’s the only way you walk off this island alive.”
I looked down at the tablet. Then, I looked up at Jonathan, and for the second time that week, a slow, terrifying smile spread across my face.
“You think I came out here without a backup plan, Jonathan?” I whispered.
Before he could answer, the sky above Blackwood Island didn’t just rumble with thunder—it roared with the deafening sound of a dozen heavy-duty military helicopters breaking through the clouds. Bright searchlights cut through the thick fog, blinding the armed guards instantly.
From the loudspeakers of the descending choppers, a crisp, booming voice echoed across the cliffs:
“This is Federal Special Operations! The island is completely surrounded! Drop your weapons and surrender immediately!”
Jonathan’s face drained of color as he spun around, watching in absolute horror as federal tactical teams fast-roped down from the sky, surrounding his men in a matter of seconds.
I reached into my trench coat, pulled out my own secure satellite phone, and tapped the screen to end the encrypted live stream that had just broadcasted Jonathan’s full confession straight to the federal prosecutor’s office.

“Checkmate, Jonathan,” I whispered, stepping forward as the federal agents swarmed the area and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto the master villain of the Vance empire.
The storm outside finally broke, washing away the darkness of the past and leaving behind the brilliant, blinding light of a brand-new dawn.
