Chapter 8 - THE MATRIARCH’S CONFESSION“You… you’re Elena Vance,” I breathed, staring at the woman who was supposed to have died in a tragic carriage accident thirty years ago. “The matriarch of the family. Dominic’s grandmother.”

Elena let out a dry, haunting laugh that sounded more like a cough. “Dead to the world, yes. But alive enough to watch my foolish son and grandson run this family empire straight into the ground.”
She stepped out of the shadows, her sharp gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that demanded respect.
“You think you staged the ultimate revenge, don’t you, child?” Elena said, walking slowly toward us. “You think by locking up Dominic and seizing the corporate shares, you’ve finally avenged your father’s death?”
“My father was murdered by the Vance family,” I shot back, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. “His ships were sabotaged, his company was stolen, and your son covered it all up!”
“Your father’s company was stolen, yes,” Elena agreed calmly, stopping just a few feet away. “But it wasn’t my son who pulled the trigger. And it wasn’t Dominic who engineered the shipping disaster.”
Marcus stepped forward, his face pale with shock. “Mother… what are you talking about? Who else was involved?”
Elena turned her piercing gaze toward Marcus, a sad, bitter smile touching her lips. “Look closer at the key around your neck, Marcus. The one your father left you in the vault.”
Marcus instinctively reached down, pulling a small silver chain from beneath his collar. Dangling from it was a miniature silver anchor—the exact replica of the emblem that had been stamped on the shipping manifests of my father’s lost fleet.

“This… this was my father’s crest,” Marcus whispered, confusion washing over his features.
“It was the crest of the syndicate,” Elena corrected softly. “A secret circle of elite shipping magnates who ruled the northern ports. And your father wasn’t the only victim, Audrey. My husband—the founder of Vance Global—tried to pull out of the syndicate thirty years ago. That’s why they tried to kill me, and that’s why they destroyed your father when he tried to expose their illegal arms trafficking.”
