Chapter 2 - The Shadows in the LedgerThe hospital room was quiet again, save for the hum of the ventilator and the rhythmic hiss of oxygen.

Arthur sat in the small, uncomfortable vinyl chair beside Tessa's bed. His massive frame made the chair look tiny, but he sat perfectly still, holding her pale, bruised hand between both of his weathered palms. He was terrified that if he pressed too hard, he would break what little was left of her.
Major Sarah Vance walked in quietly, letting the heavy door click shut behind her. She set her briefcase on the small bedside table and looked at her brother. The stoic, unyielding prosecutor demeanor melted away, replaced by deep sorrow.
"The brothers are in federal custody," Sarah said softly. "Marcus is being held in a secure holding facility downtown. He’s already trying to invoke executive privilege through his connections in Washington."
"He won't get it," Arthur said, his eyes never leaving Tessa’s face. "The paper trail I left with FinCEN is airtight. Every bribe, every altered shipping manifest, every offshore account in the Caymans—it’s all linked directly to his personal signature."
"Arthur..." Sarah hesitated, reaching out to touch his shoulder. "It’s not just about the money."
Arthur’s eyes shifted slowly upward. "What do you mean?"
Sarah opened her briefcase and pulled out a manila folder stamped with a bright red RESTRICTED seal. She laid it open over the bedside table. Inside were medical scans, blood test results, and toxicology reports.
"The doctor who treated Tessa before you arrived... he was on Marcus’s payroll," Sarah explained, her voice dipping into a tense whisper. "We intercepted him trying to leave the facility twenty minutes ago. We searched his bag."
Arthur’s grip on Tessa's hand tightened almost imperceptibly. "What did he have?"
"Synthetic paralyzing agents," Sarah revealed. "The injuries from the beating were severe, Arthur, but they weren't meant to kill her immediately. Marcus didn't beat her just to get her trust fund. He was poisoning her systematically over the last six months."
Arthur stood up slowly. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. "Why?"
"Because Tessa found out what Marcus was actually shipping through those military contracts," Sarah said, pulling a secondary document from the folder. "It wasn't just marked-up supply parts. Marcus’s company was being used as a front by a private military syndicate known as The Iron Syndicate. They were smuggling unregistered weapons and biological materials out of active war zones."
Arthur’s breath hitched. He looked down at Tessa—her swollen face, her pale skin.
"She wasn't just a daughter to them," Arthur realized, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of grief and rage. "She was a witness."
"She uncovered the ledger three weeks ago," Sarah added. "She tried to hide it. She didn't tell you because she knew you were in the middle of a high-risk operation in Syria. She was trying to protect you."
A soft, ragged gasp broke the silence.
Arthur spun around. Tessa’s eyelids were fluttering. Her chest heaved against the ventilator straps. The heart rate monitor spiked wildly—110, 130, 145.
"Tessa!" Arthur leaned over her, placing his hands gently on her shoulders. "Tessa, look at me. It’s Arthur. You’re safe. I’m right here."
Her eyes cracked open, unfocused and bloodshot. She didn't look at Arthur's face. She looked down at her own stomach, her hands weakly twitching against the sheets.
"Arthur..." her voice was a tiny, shredded whisper beneath the plastic mask. "...the baby..."
Arthur felt his heart tear completely out of his chest. Tears finally brimmed in his eyes, hot and scalding, but he forced his voice to remain steady. "I’m so sorry, sweetheart. I’m so, so sorry."
Tessa’s lips quivered. Tears spilled over her bruised cheeks, running into her hairline. But then, her hand moved weakly, grabbing the front of Arthur’s shirt with surprising force.
"Not... lost..." she croaked out, straining against the ventilator.

Arthur froze. "What?"
"The... second... one..." she gasped, her eyes wide with desperate urgency. "Twins, Arthur... they... they don't know..."
