Chapter 6 - The Siege at DawnThe sky over the city was turning a violent, bruised shade of purple as dawn approached.

Outside St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, chaos reigned. Three unmarked black SUVs had rammed through the emergency room entrance gates. Heavy automatic gunfire shattered the glass facade of the ground floor. Civilian doctors and nurses screamed as they fled into the streets, while Sarah’s military guards engaged in a desperate firefight in the main lobby.
On the 4th floor—the ICU—the emergency lights flashed red, casting long, blood-colored shadows down the hallways.
Inside room 402, Tessa lay in her bed, her eyes wide with terror as the building shook from explosions below. Beside her, a young nurse trembled, holding a plastic syringe, trying to shield Tessa with her own body.
BANG. BANG.
The heavy reinforced doors of the ICU were breached.
Two men wearing ballistic masks and dark tactical uniforms stepped into the corridor, carrying suppressed submachine guns. They moved with professional, lethal precision, checking each room and firing shots into the ceiling to drive away any remaining staff.
"Target is in 402," the lead mercenary said into his radio. "Terminating all witnesses now."
He reached the door of room 402, raised his weapon, and kicked the door handle.
BOOM.
The mercenary didn't expect the door to detonate outward.
A directional breach charge attached to the inside handle exploded, blowing the door off its hinges and sending the lead mercenary flying backward into the hallway wall, his armor torn to ribbons.
Out of the smoke, Sarah Vance stepped through, firing two precise rounds into the second mercenary’s chest. He crumpled to the floor.
"Tessa!" Sarah yelled, running back into the room, her hand bleeding from a shrapnel cut. "We have to move! Now!"
"I... I can't..." Tessa cried out, tears flowing freely down her pale face as she clutched her stomach. "The pain... Sarah, the baby..."
"You have to fight, Tessa!" Sarah grabbed the intravenous stand and unlocked the wheels of the hospital bed. "Arthur is coming! He has the antidote! You just have to hold on for five more minutes!"
CRACK.
A high-caliber sniper round shattered the window behind them, obliterating the heart rate monitor. Sarah hit the deck, pulling Tessa’s bed behind a concrete support pillar just in time as a hail of gunfire tore through the drywall from the adjacent roof.
"They’ve cut off the stairwells!" Sarah shouted into her comms unit. "We’re pinned in the ICU! Requesting immediate air support!"
"Negative, Prosecutor Vance," a cold voice replied over the military frequency—a voice that didn't belong to her unit. "Air support has been scrubbed by the Regional Command. You are in a zero-sanction zone. Stand down and surrender the asset."
Sarah’s eyes widened. The Syndicate had reached the top levels of military command. They were cutting off all rescue efforts. They were letting them die in this room.
"We’re on our own," Sarah whispered, looking at her dwindling ammunition magazine. She had four rounds left.
Down the hallway, the heavy footsteps of at least six more armed men echoed against the tile floor. They were moving in for the final push.
Tessa reached out, her hand weak, touching Sarah’s wrist. "Sarah... take... take the drive..."
Tessa fumbled under her pillow, pulling out a small, blood-stained USB drive.
"The ledger..." Tessa whispered, her breathing growing impossibly shallow. "It has... the names of the generals... the politicians... everything. Don't let them... hide it..."
"Tessa, keep talking to me!" Sarah begged, checking her pulse. It was fluttering wildly, dropping into fatal territory. "Tessa!"
Outside the room, a heavy tactical boot stepped over the debris. A cold, metallic voice echoed through the ruined hall:
"Prosecutor Vance. Throw out the drive and step away from the girl. You have five seconds."
Sarah looked at her gun. Four rounds. Six men.
She loaded the chamber, took a deep breath, and prepared to make her final stand.
"Five..." the mercenary counted down.
"Four..."
"Three..."
Suddenly, from the far end of the hallway, a sound cut through the chaos.
May you like
It wasn't a gunshot. It wasn't an explosion.
It was the roar of a modified V8 engine accelerating at top speed inside the building.
