Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Route 9

The snowstorm outside battered the glass facade of the mansion, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of impending war. Nathan spun the dial of his safe, pulling out an encrypted satellite phone and an old, battered leather file folder. Inside were documents he hadn’t looked at in a decade—private investigator reports detailing Marcus Kane’s true history before he met Sarah.

Marcus wasn't just a low-level gambler; he was an enforcer for a regional syndicate, a man who specialized in insurance fraud and coerced inheritances. Seven years ago, when Sarah had inherited a modest trust fund from their late grandmother, Marcus had systematically isolated her, convinced her that Nathan despised her, and forced her to sign over power of attorney. Nathan had tried to intervene, but his pride had gotten in the way. He had given Sarah an ultimatum: Choose him, or lose me.

She had chosen poorly, but she had paid for it with her life. And now, Nathan was going to ensure Marcus paid with his soul.

"Doctor," Rosa called out softly from the doorway. "Lily is waking up."

Nathan dropped the file and rushed back to the fireside. Lily’s pale eyelashes fluttered against her bruised cheeks. Her green eyes—identical to Sarah’s—slowly opened, darting around the unfamiliar, luxurious room with sudden, primal panic.

"Don't move, sweetheart," Nathan said, his voice cracking as he knelt beside her mattress. He forced himself to smile, though his throat felt like it was wrapped in barbed wire. "You're safe here. Uncle Nathan is here."

Lily stared at him for a long moment, the terror in her eyes slowly giving way to recognition. Her little hands instinctively reached under the blanket, clutching the edge of the pillow where she had hidden her brothers.

"Mommy..." Lily whispered, her voice a dry rasp. "Mommy fell down. There was red on the floor. The bad man..."

"I know, Lily. I know," Nathan interrupted gently, brushing a damp lock of blond hair from her forehead. A tear slipped down his cheek, hot and uninvited. "You were so brave. You walked through the storm to save Owen and Ethan. You did what your mother asked."

May you like

"Is Mommy coming?" she asked, her lower lip quivering.

Nathan swallowed the lump in his throat. He looked at the silver bracelet resting on the side table. "Mommy is resting, Lily. But I promise you, on everything I hold sacred, the man who hurt her will never, ever be able to hurt anyone again."
