Chapter 2 - The Silent Sirens and the Iron AlibiForty-five minutes later, an unmarked black SUV and a sleek white ambulance crept down the suburban lane without a single flash or wail. Two paramedics and a stern, middle-aged man in a tailored trench coat—State Investigator Miller—stepped quietly onto Mrs. Greene’s porch.

Investigator Miller crouched beside Elena, flashing a small penlight into her eyes. He didn't look like a standard cop; his eyes were sharp, analytical, and entirely devoid of pity—which, to Elena, was the greatest comfort of all. He didn't need pity. He needed power.
"Mrs. Carter," Miller said in a low, gravelly baritone. "Your neighbor tells me you've suffered a grievous bodily assault. Are you willing to press charges at the state level, bypassing local jurisdiction?"
Elena gripped the edge of the woolen blanket, her knuckles turning white. The pain in her leg was a white-hot spike with every heartbeat, but her voice was steady when she answered. "I want every single one of them arrested. My husband, Ethan Carter. My father-in-law, Robert Carter. And my mother-in-law, Linda Carter. For attempted murder, domestic terrorism, and concealment of a felony."
Miller raised a single eyebrow, a ghost of a smirk touching his lips. "That's a heavy menu, ma'am. Do you have proof?"
Elena reached up with a trembling, mud-stained hand and tapped her temple. "It's all in my head. And it's backed up across three secure servers that will auto-release corporate corruption documents worth fifty million dollars to the federal prosecutor's office the moment my heart monitor drops below a stable resting rate, or if I manually press a panic authorization code."

Miller stared at her for a long, silent second. Then, a slow, appreciative grin spread across his face. "Well, Mrs. Carter. It looks like your husband picked the wrong financial analyst to cage. Let's go pay your family a visit."
As the paramedics loaded Elena onto a stretcher, strapping her securely and administering a heavy dose of intravenous painkillers that dulled the roaring agony in her leg, Miller leaned down close to her ear. "While you're heading to the regional trauma center in protective custody, my team is going to pay a little midnight social call to your lovely home. Let's see how they enjoy their football game with federal marshals kicking down their front door."
