Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of FreedomSix months later, the sun shone brightly over the pristine white marble steps of the newly renamed Phoenix Foundation for Domestic Survivors.

The sprawling Carter mansion—once a gilded prison where Elena had nearly lost her life—had been completely stripped of its oppressive dark wood and heavy draperies. The walls were painted bright, welcoming colors, and the grand living room where Ethan had sat watching football while she bled was now a state-of-the-art counseling center for women escaping abusive households.
Elena stood on the front balcony, leaning lightly against a sleek, modern cane as her leg continued its final stages of miraculous healing.
A sleek black car pulled up to the driveway, and Investigator Miller stepped out, holding a thick manila folder under his arm. He walked up the front steps and joined her on the balcony, handing her the final document.
"It's official, Elena," Miller said quietly, a respectful smile touching his lips. "The federal liquidation is complete. Every single penny of the Carter empire has been legally transferred into the Foundation. You are officially the sole owner of this property—and one of the most prominent independent philanthropists in the state."
Elena opened the folder, flipping past the financial charts to a simple, framed photograph resting at the back. It was a picture of her taken on her graduation day, years before she had ever met Ethan—a young woman full of fierce ambition, unstoppable dreams, and boundless hope.
She had lost a lot of things that rainy night. She had lost her marriage, her illusions, and months of her physical mobility.
But as she looked out over the sun-drenched lawns where she had once crawled through the mud, she realized she had gained something infinitely more valuable.

She had gained herself back.
"Thank you, Miller," Elena said softly, closing the folder and looking out toward the horizon where the sky stretched endlessly, completely free of storms. "I think... I'm finally ready to start the next chapter."
