Chapter 1 - THE FORBIDDEN PROTOCOL

The rooftop was so silent you could hear the ice melting in abandoned champagne flutes.

The crowd of ultra-wealthy elites stood frozen, their thousand-dollar phones raised high, lenses catching the dramatic crimson flare of the fading sunset.

Julian Vance—the eighteen-year-old heir to the multi-billion-dollar Vance NeuroTech empire—was staring directly at the homeless boy. His eyes, completely unseeing for six long years, were trembling.

Not trembling from disease. Trembling from light.

“His eyes... they moved!” a high-society woman gasped, her voice cut short as Julian’s chief bodyguard, Marcus, unholstered a suppressed sidearm beneath his tailored jacket.

“Hands where I can see them, kid!” Marcus snarled, his heavy frame stepping between Julian and the dusty intruder. “You have three seconds to explain how you bypassed forty armed guards and fifty floors of biometric security, or I put a bullet through your spine.”

The homeless boy didn't flinch. He slowly pulled back the hood of his sweat-stained sweatshirt, revealing sharp, sun-darkened features, a faint silver scar across his left collarbone, and eyes that burned with terrifying focus.

“My name is Leo,” the boy said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying effortless authority. “And if your men touch me, Marcus, the micro-charge implanted inside Julian’s left optic nerve will detonate in ninety seconds.”

The entire rooftop gasped.

Marcus froze, his hand tightening on his gun. “You’re bluffing.”

“Am I?” Leo smirked softly, raising his right hand. Taped to his forearm was a crude, glowing frequency modulator built from scrap electronics and a military-grade neural transmitter. “Six years ago, Julian didn't lose his sight in a car crash. His father, Arthur Vance, lied to the entire world. It wasn't an accident. It was Project Chimera—the first human trial for a synthetic optic hive-mind.”

Julian’s breath hitched violently. His pale hands gripped the carbon-fiber armrests of his wheelchair so hard his knuckles turned translucent white.

“How... how do you know about Chimera?” Julian whispered, his voice trembling with raw, unadulterated terror. “My father wiped every file. The scientists... they all died in the lab explosion!”

“They didn't all die,” Leo said, taking a deliberate step forward. The guards twitched, but Marcus held up a trembling hand, signaling them to stand down. “My mother was the lead bio-engineer. She built the bridge between your brain stem and the visual cortex. And right before Arthur Vance ordered the laboratory burned to the ground to cover his tracks, my mother placed the master encryption key in the one place your father could never reach.”

Leo pointed a dirty, calloused finger directly at Julian’s chest.

“Inside you.”

The crowd began murmuring frantically. Live-stream comments on the guests' phones were exploding by the tens of thousands every second:

“IS THIS REAL? THE VANCE EMPIRE IS FAKE?”

“WHO IS THIS KID??”

“CALL THE FBI!”

“You’re insane,” Julian choked out, tears finally breaking past his pale eyelashes, tracing lines through the dust on his cheeks. “I’m blind! I’ve spent six years in total fucking darkness! I’ve paid fifty million dollars to top surgeons across the globe! They all said my optic nerves were dead wood!”

“Because they were looking at your eyes, Julian,” Leo leaned down, his face inches from the young billionaire's. “Your eyes aren't broken. Your brain is intentionally blocking the feed. Your father didn't put dark glasses on you to protect your sensitive retinas. He put them on you so no one would see the synthetic glowing iris spinning beneath your pupils whenever you get close to Vance NeuroTech hardware.”

Leo reached out and tapped the side of Julian’s head—right at the temple.

CLICK.

A tiny, mechanical hum echoed from behind Julian’s ears.

Instantly, the blind billionaire screamed. He grabbed his head, throwing his body back against the wheelchair as violent crimson light burst out from behind his eyelids. The dark glasses clattered against the marble floor and shattered.

“JULIAN!” Marcus screamed, lunging forward.

“DON’T TOUCH HIM!” Leo roared, tapping the transmitter on his wrist. “If you disrupt the calibration sequence now, his cerebral cortex will burn out in milliseconds!”

Julian’s eyes snapped wide open.

They weren't blue anymore. They weren't brown.

Intricate, razor-thin golden geometric lines were spinning inside his pupils, mapping the rooftop in real-time wireframes. High-tech digital schematics flickered across his irises like a military heads-up display.

“I... I can see...” Julian gasped, hyperventilating as the sunset skyline reconstructed itself in luminous digital gold in his mind. “I can see the heat signatures... I can see the heartbeats... I can see...”

Julian stopped. His glowing eyes locked onto Leo’s dirty face.

The digital overlay hovering over Leo didn't show bone or tissue. It showed a flashing crimson symbol:

[SUBJECT 00: ORIGINAL HOST - MATCH 100%]

“You...” Julian choked out, his voice dropping to an icy whisper. “You aren't here to save me.”

Leo smiled—a cold, terrifying smile that sent shivers down the spines of everyone watching.

“No, brother,” Leo whispered softly into Julian’s ear as heavy tactical attack helicopters suddenly broke through the rooftop clouds, searchlights blinding the crowd. “I came to take my eyes back.”
