Chapter 4 - THE TWIN PARADOX

DEAD SILENCE.

For five terrifying seconds, the top of the Vance Tower was engulfed in total darkness under the moonlight. The attack helicopters wobbled in mid-air as their electronic flight control systems temporarily glitched.

Then— HUMMMMMMMM.

A shockwave of brilliant, iridescent light erupted from the center of the rooftop.

Julian and Leo stood side-by-side in the center of the terrace, surrounded by a swirling sphere of golden data streams. Their eyes—both of their eyes now—were glowing with identical, luminescent energy.

Julian was no longer shaking. His posture was straight, his face calm, his mind flooded with eighteen years of suppressed memories.

He saw it all. He remembered the cold steel tables of the secret subterranean facility. He remembered holding Leo’s hand when they were six years old, whispering promises to each other through the glass dividers. He remembered the exact moment Arthur Vance had signed the execution order for their mother.

“I remember,” Julian whispered, a single tear dropping from his eye and turning into a shimmering speck of light before it hit the ground. “I remember everything, Leo.”

“Welcome back, brother,” Leo said grimly.

“IMPOSSIBLE!” Arthur Vance’s voice cracked over the backup emergency speakers, losing its arrogant composure. “The neural firewall should have fried your brains! How are you synchronizing without the core mainframe?!”

Julian looked directly up at the camera lens mounted on the rooftop ledge.

“Because you made a critical mistake, Arthur,” Julian said, calling his father by his first name for the first time in his life. “You thought human consciousness was just code. You thought love, pain, and memory could be quantified, stored, and controlled.”

“You built us to be your ultimate server,” Leo added, stepping beside Julian, his arm-mounted device fusing seamlessly with the golden energy enveloping them. “But you forgot one thing: a network works both ways.”

Julian raised his right hand. Leo raised his left.

The golden data sphere surrounding them expanded violently, cascading off the rooftop and racing down the side of the sixty-story skyscraper like a tsunami of pure light.

BAM! BAM! BAM!

Every server room in Vance Tower began exploding in sequence from the 60th floor down to the basement.

“NO! STOP IT!” Arthur Vance screamed on the screen as terminal error messages flooded his control panel. “SYSTEM INTRUSION! SECURITY PROTOCOL ALPHA CRITICAL! SHUT DOWN THE POWER GRID!”

“You wanted Phase Two, Arthur?” Julian roared, his voice echoing with a eerie, double-layered harmonic tone alongside Leo’s. “Here is Phase Two: SYSTEM FORMAT!”

With a final, blinding flare of power, the giant LED screen across the street exploded into a shower of sparks. The attack helicopters lost control entirely, their automated guidance systems fried, forcing the pilots to disengage and retreat into the dark night sky.

The rooftop doors slammed open as the magnetic locks failed. The terrifying tension snapped. The rich elites sprinted out screaming, abandoning their shoes, phones, and dignity in a desperate bid to escape.

Marcus, still clutching his broken knee on the floor, stared up at the two boys in sheer horror.

“What... what are you two?” Marcus stammered, backing away on his elbows.

Julian walked over to Marcus, his golden eyes settling down into a deep, intense storm-grey.

“Tell Arthur that his servers are dead,” Julian said coldly. “Tell him we’re coming to the basement. And tell him to bring every soldier he has left.”

Leo tapped Julian on the shoulder, pointing down toward the main elevator shaft, which was now glowing with a strange, pulsing indigo light.

“We don't need to go to the basement, Julian,” Leo said, his face going pale.

Julian turned. “Why?”

Leo showed him his arm display. A faint, frantic signal was transmitting from deep underground—not from their father, but from something far worse.

Julian and Leo locked eyes, realization dawning upon them like a bucket of ice water.

Arthur Vance hadn't built the AI. He had only been its caretaker. And by formatting Arthur's control servers, the twins hadn't destroyed the machine—they had just unchained it.
