Chapter 3 - THE ZERO HOUR PROTOCOL

The rooftop temperature seemed to plummet ten degrees.

Arthur Vance’s ice-cold voice reverberated off the surrounding glass towers. On the massive LED screen across the street, complex lines of code were rapidly overwriting the city’s power grid layout.

“Did you really think you escaped the laboratory six years ago on your own, Leo?” Arthur Vance chuckled softly—a dry, soulless sound. “Every step you took... every piece of scrap metal you gathered to build that crude frequency modulator on your arm... I let you do it. I needed you to come back to Julian. Only your unique biological signature could trigger his latent ocular core.”

Leo’s eyes widened slightly. For the first time, his unshakeable calm flickered.

“You’re lying,” Leo spat, raising his arm-mounted device. “I modified the encryption algorithm! You can't override my master signal!”

“Can’t I?” Arthur Vance smiled coldly. “Look at your brother.”

Leo whipped his head toward Julian.

Julian was on his knees, screaming in agony. The golden geometric lines in his irises were turning a dark, blood-red hue. Black veins were crawling up his neck, tracing his carotid arteries toward his jawline.

“AHHHHH!” Julian clawed at his own face, blood dripping from beneath his fingernails. “Leo! Make it stop! It feels like my brain is burning!”

“Julian!” Leo dropped to his knees beside his twin, frantically re-wiring the tiny components on his arm-mounted rig. “Hang on! He’s trying to initiate a total wipe of your brain stem! He’s using your visual cortex to broadcast an EMP-neural pulse across the entire city!”

“Why?!” Julian sobbed, his voice cracking with excruciating pain. “Why would he do this to us? We’re his sons!”

“Because we aren't his sons!” Leo yelled over the deafening roar of the helicopter rotors. “We were created in a lab! We’re synthetic organ hosts designed to store the Aegis AI network! The moment your brain purges, Vance NeuroTech takes control of every digital device, every military grid, and every neural implant on the planet!”

The crowd of wealthy elites on the rooftop finally realized the terrifying reality. They weren't just watching family drama—they were hostage witnesses to an apocalyptic hostile takeover.

“Run! Get to the stairs!” a billionaire screamed, knocking over an elderly woman as the crowd stampeded toward the fire exits.

BOOM!

The heavy steel fire doors slammed shut automatically. Magnetic locks sealed with a loud, metallic clatter.

“Nobody leaves,” Arthur Vance’s voice thundered from the billboard. “Tonight, the old elite dies. Tomorrow, humanity awakens under unified computational order. Leo, give up the decryption chip on your collarbone. Save your brother the pain.”

Julian looked up through a haze of red digital static. His vision was breaking down into fragmented glitch patterns. He could see his father’s facial biometric mapping, the structural integrity of the surrounding skyscrapers, and... something else.

Deep inside Leo’s chest, mapped by his golden ocular HUD, Julian saw a tiny, pulsating blue core.

Not a machine. A heart. A real, biological heart that was beating in perfect synch with his own.

“Leo...” Julian whispered, catching his twin’s dusty hand. “Our hearts... they’re synchronized.”

Leo paused, looking down at Julian’s bloody face. “What did you say?”

“The frequency...” Julian coughed, spit mixed with blood running down his chin. “My father didn't put the master key in my eyes. He put it in the synaptic resonance between us! If our heart rates match... the override stops!”

Leo’s eyes locked onto Julian’s. He understood instantly.

“We have to merge the neural link,” Leo said, his voice deadly serious. “If we do this, Julian, you won't just see the world. You’ll feel everything I’ve suffered for six years. The torture, the cold, the hunger... all of it will flood into your mind at once. You might not survive the shock.”

Julian looked at his bloodied hands, then up at the giant screen showing his ruthless father’s face.

“I’ve lived eighteen years in a lie, Leo,” Julian said, his eyes burning with newfound fire. “I’d rather die in the truth than live another second as his puppet. Do it!”

Leo grabbed the back of Julian’s head. He ripped the glowing neural patch from his own chest and slammed it directly onto the back of Julian’s neck.
