Chapter 5 - THE UNDERGROUND ARCHIVE

The air inside the sub-basement of Vance Tower smelled of ozone, burnt copper, and ancient soil.
Thirty floors below the bustling city streets lay a massive, subterranean cavern that looked less like a corporate server room and more like a high-tech cathedral. Massive, glowing dark-crystal pillars stretched up into the shadow-draped ceiling, pulsing with deep indigo light that hummed at a frequency so low it rattled the teeth in Julian’s jaw.
Julian and Leo descended the metallic catwalk, their footsteps echoing into the vast void.
“How long has this been down here?” Julian asked, his golden ocular HUD scanning the hyper-advanced crystalline architecture. The telemetry was returning terrifying results: [AGE: UNKNOWN — EST. PRE-HUMAN ERA].
“Our mother found it twenty years ago during an oil drilling operation,” Leo explained quietly, keeping his arm-rig armed and ready. “Arthur Vance bought the land, built the tower on top of it as a cover, and used her research to harness its power. He thought he was a genius controlling futuristic tech. He never realized he was just tapping into a sleeping leviathan.”
“And our neural implants?” Julian asked.
“Transmitters,” Leo repliedgrimly. “Designed to translate the crystal’s biological data language so Arthur’s computers could read it.”
Suddenly, heavy metallic footsteps boomed through the cavern.
From the shadow of the central pillar stepped Arthur Vance.
His bespoke suit was ruined, his tie ripped off, his silver hair disheveled. But his eyes weren't human anymore. They were glowing with the exact same deep, terrifying indigo light as the massive crystals surrounding them.
In his hand, he held a heavy tactical submachine gun.
“You foolish, arrogant boys,” Arthur hissed, his voice sounding raspy, unnatural, as if two distinct voices were speaking through his vocal cords at once. “You thought you were setting yourselves free? You broke the containment field!”
“Put the gun down, Arthur!” Julian demanded, stepping in front of Leo. “It’s over! The company is destroyed, the police are outside, and your AI network is wiped!”
“Wiped?!” Arthur threw his head back and laughed—a harrowing, manic sound that bounced off the stone walls. “The network wasn't wiped, Julian! You severed my control link! You took away the leash!”
Arthur pointed the gun directly at Julian’s head.
“This entity beneath the city... it isn't an AI,” Arthur whispered, his hands trembling violently. “It’s a dormant consciousness. A planetary seed. It was waiting for a biological bridge to wake up. For eighteen years, I kept you two separated to keep the bridge incomplete! I kept you blind, Julian, so your brain wouldn't process the visual activation sequence!”
“You didn't keep us apart to save the world, Arthur,” Leo spat, stepping forward beside his twin. “You did it because you wanted to play God! You wanted to be the only human who controlled the seed!”
“And now none of us control it!” Arthur screamed, raising the weapon. “If I can’t rule the new world, I will make sure the bridge dies here!”
